Zinedine Zidane praises Real Madrid after a narrow victory against Eibar

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has lavished praise on his side after a narrow 2-1 victory over La Liga side Eibar on Saturday.

The Los Blancos struggled to take hold of the game in the first half before superstar Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring after a sensational pass from Croatian star Luka Modric. But the second half proved to be the difference for Eibar, with the home side getting an equalizer just after half-time through Ivan Ramis.

However, with Real Madrid sitting third in the La Liga table a draw would do them more harm than good, especially with Valencia a mere one point behind them. But with Cristiano Ronaldo in fine form after the scoring 10 goals in his last six games in all competitions, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner scored his second of the game to put Madrid ahead, six minutes from time.

This lead Zinedine Zidane to lavish praise on not just Ronaldo for his superb performance but also praise the strength that the rest of the team showed. “For me, he’s from another galaxy,” Zidane said. “What he does is very positive; he knows he’s going to score.

When he has two goals, he wants three. He’s a different, special player. Data speaks for itself. He’s very good. You have to value the opposing team, too. We have not found our game very well, but Cristiano knows what he’s doing. In just a few occasions he can score many goals.”

“Well, like everyone,” Zidane further added talking about the team’s form. “We were a little worse than usual as a whole, not just Isco and Bale. We did not find our game, we had many difficulties. Everyone – including Isco and Bale – fought, they have run a lot and it matters to me that, when things do not come off, you still have character and we had that.

[Eibar] have been better, clearly. They have played a great game, especially in the first half. We knew that we were going to suffer. We had difficulties.”

Author’s take:

Cristiano Ronaldo has been in exceptional form for more than ten odd years, and his exceptional trophy case showcases just that. However, the Portuguese international is 33 years old but that doesn’t seem to have stopped him, and maybe he is from another galaxy. But Real Madrid need him at his very best, if they are to finish in the top four and win the Champions League.
