Zinedine Zidane says La Liga still reachable, refuses to claim defeat in the title race.
The French tactician remains adamant on his team’s title credentials. Real Madrid stuttered to their fifth loss this season against Espanyol Wednesday, but Zidane still feels his side can catch Barcelona. The Catalans currently boast a fifteen point lead over their Clasico rivals but that doesn’t seem to bother the Real Madrid gaffer.
Los Blancos have been pipped in the death for the third time this season. Previously they were defeated by Villarreal and Betis right before the final whistle. An underwhelming campaign has seen them falter to third place in the La Liga, however, Zizou remains optimistic over his side’s title hopes.
Real Madrid can still win La Liga – Zidane
Real Madrid has played 26 out of their 38 matches in the Primera Division. They currently trail league leaders Barcelona by fifteen points. Despite struggling both offensively and defensively this term, Zidane feels his side can do the unthinkable. According to the 45-year-old coach, his team can bridge the massive gap between them and their arch-rivals Barcelona.
The Blaugrana were held by Las Palmas on Friday, and as a consequence, Madrid can close down the gap by winning against Getafe. Speaking ahead of the game, Zidane told the media about his thoughts on Real’s title credentials. He said,“What we have to do is win games, that’s all. Keep going to the end of the season. That’s what we have to do and that’s what we have to think about.”
“It’s not easy to go out and win all the games but it’s what the players have to try and do. If we’re always motivated and thinking about the game, then we can achieve something great.” The Spanish and European champions have clearly underperformed this term. However, that does not bother their manager who feels side can defy all odds.
“There’s always a league – it’s right to the end for every team. Perhaps everyone thinks the league is over but in football, you can never give up. That’s what we have to do. We have to get it into our heads that our remaining league games are important.
We’re going to fight until the end of the league. It’s complicated but it’s not impossible, that’s the difference between what I say and what you [the media] say. It’s difficult, it’s very difficult, but it’s not impossible,” said the Frenchman.
Zidane: "For us, winning La Liga will be difficult, of course, but not impossible. If Atletico win the game on Sunday against Barcelona they will be two points back, nobody expected that. So there is a Liga title race. I am always optimistic, until the end." pic.twitter.com/FomVQbOf3B

He further added,“We went on a run of five wins, that’s football. Last Tuesday against Espanyol, we were angry to lose but we didn’t expect to lose. We made some mistakes. When things go wrong you can’t just think about that, you have to look at the positives. Think about what we were doing before.”
Barcelona host Atletico Madrid on Sunday which can be deemed as an early title decider. Whatever transpires in that game will be crucial for Real while Zidane insists that the title race is not over yet. He said,“It will be difficult, yes, but it won’t be impossible. Look what’s happening between the first and second teams, only five points different. Did you expect that? If Atletico wins then it’s only two points.
Did anyone expect that? The league still exists and I’m an optimist, always, until the very end.”
A big outcome will surely be drawn in the Barca-Atleti game on Sunday. Madrid will hope for a stalemate which would help them cut the gap between both teams above them. Can the Los Blancos actually make a comeback this late in the title race? History suggests otherwise but Zidane remains hopeful. Only time will tell the truth.
