Liverpool are expected to be very active during this transfer window as they look to sign a big-name player to replace Gini Wijnaldum, who has completed a move to PSG. The Reds need a midfielder, and a big signing is expected before the start of the next season.
They are in search of a young player who can be a long-term replacement for Wijnaldum and contribute more. Klopp has been offered a significant amount of funds to make a big-name signing and make the squad stronger.
Let’s have a look at the players currently Liverpool are looking to sign to replace Wijnaldum-
Liverpool transfer targets
1) Florian Neuhas
The first name on the list is Borussia Monchengladbach star, Florian Neuhaus. The 24-year-old has not been short of interested suitors. Though he is not a like-to-like replacement for Wijnaldum, it isn’t necessarily a bad thing. He enjoys venturing forward and had eight goals and eight assists in 20/21.
But it means Klopp will have to tweak his system a bit to make the best use of his fellow German.
“I play at Borussia, I have a contract. We as a club are still pursuing very big goals this season. I can’t say what will happen in the summer at the moment.“- Neuhaus when asked about his expected move to Liverpool in Feb.
2) Sergej Milinkovic-Savic
Reports suggest Liverpool want the Lazio star at Anfield this summer. Though he still has 3 years left on his contract with the Serie A club. He could be sold this year. Milinkovic-Savic has been in great form over the years, and it seems a move to one of the world’s top clubs is long overdue. He scored 8 and assisted 10 in 32 Serie A games this season. The Serbian international has a market value of £63 million.
Savic would be a perfect replacement for Wijanldum. Just like the Dutchman, he is a talented box-to-box midfielder who contributes equally to the offensive and the defensive department. Only 26 years old, he fits the long-term solution Klopp is looking for, he would be the perfect addition to the Liverpool squad.
Just 18-years old, Pedri has been a revelation at Barcelona. The youngster played a prominent role for the Catalans last season, making 37 appearances in La Liga. He also contributed 3 goals and 3 assists in the league and was quite impressive. The Spanish international already 4 caps for the national team and has been called up to be a part of the squad for Euros.
Liverpool have made Pedri a “priority transfer target” this summer after being impressed by the 18-year-old’s performances. He has a £70 million release clause, but Barcelona is looking to tie him down to a new deal and will not want to lose him.
What will Liverpool do?
Well, the best thing for the Reds to do right now would be to lie in wait. Two of Liverpool’s transfer targets are playing in Euro 2020 and will not be available to sign on the dotted line. It’s the perfect opportunity for the Reds to decide who they want on their team after analyzing their performances in the tournament.
Liverpool should go after Savic or Neuhaus if they are hoping to challenge for the Premier League title again. Pedri is still 18 and still developing, going after someone with experience and their prime would make more sense instead of investing such a huge amount on a player who might not even do well in the Premier League.
