Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers smash Gujarat Lions to pulp.
Kohli and De Villiers struck a record-breaking partnership of 229 runs to reduce Gujarat Lions to pulp at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Kohli finished on 109 off just 55 balls while de Villiers remained unbeaten on 129 in his 52 balls. Bangalore scored an eye-popping 248/3 before bowling Gujarat out for just 104 to secure a scintillating 144-run win.
RCB openers Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle were struggling to put bat to ball in the first four overs. Gujarat pacer Dhawal Kulkarni ended Gayle’s struggle at the crease removing him for just eight in the fourth over. However, AB de Villiers, who came in at No. 3, didn’t take long to get to his brutal best at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
The South African, in the very first over, deposited mystery spinner Shivil Kaushik into the deep extra-cover stands. It was just a back-foot punch but it had the wings to sail over the boundary ropes. De Villiers went on with his big-hitting routine smashing the experienced Pravin Tambe this time in the sixth over.
RCB, who were struggling initially, looked back on track at the end of the seventh over courtesy De Villiers’ big-hitting. Lions skipper Brendon McCullum was searching for answers, looking to stop the carnage. Dhawal Kulkarni was brought back into the attack in the 12th over to get the breakthrough, but was spanked for 22 runs.
Royal Challengers Bangalore romp to a 144-run win, the biggest in the tournament’s history.
Kohli was happy enough to play second fiddle in the initial stages of the innings. However, as the innings progressed, he also got in the groove and they together began to rip apart the Lions bowling lineup. De Villiers went after Praveen Kumar in the 16th over sweeping him for a 103-metre six. He followed it up with another six through mid-wicket.
The South African brought up his century in no time off just 43 balls. It was the fastest century scored by any batsman in the season. Kohli, who was batting at the other end, shifted gears and took on the helpless Gujarat Lions’ bowling line-up. He went berserk in the penultimate over bowled by Shivil Kaushik scoring 30 runs.
Kohli got to a ton with a huge six off the final over, becoming the first player to score three centuries in a single IPL season. Kohli was eventually dismissed by Praveen Kumar off the second last ball of the innings. Shane Watson went for a first-ball duck as RCB finished with at 248/3 at the end of their 20 overs.
The Lions could never really recover from the onslaught from Bangalore. RCB’s bowlers produced a superb bowling effort to bundle them out for just 104 in 18.4 overs. None of the batsmen apart from Aaron Finch managed to stay at the crease for any considerable time. Chris Jordan picked up 4/11 for Bangalore while Yuzuvendra Chahal also chipped in with 3/19.
