Revealed: What prompted Kevin De Bruyne to leave Chelsea?

Chelsea have always had a talented squad in the Premier League. Their youth setup is one of the best in all of Europe. The club have forged many talented players over the years but they don’t make the best of decisions in retaining them.

Chelsea let go of 2 players who went on to be the biggest names in Europe. One of them is Mohamed Salah who plays for league rivals Liverpool. The second one is Kevin De Bruyne who now is the centerpiece at Manchester City.

Kevin was an exciting prospect for the club. But he wasn’t getting enough game time as Jose Mourinho preferred to play Oscar instead of De Bruyne. The Belgian International finally went on to join Wolfsburg in 2014.

De Bruyne just exploded in his first season with Wolfsburg. In 51 appearances for the club, he had 16 goals and 28 assists. He also led the club to win the DFB Pokal that season.

He was brought back to England the very next season as Manchester City secured a deal for him and he’s been one of the best in the Premier League ever since. One would think what could Chelsea have achieved with someone like him alongside Eden Hazard.

But why did De Bruyne had to leave? The answer probably lies in his conversation with Jose Mourinho. De Bruyne felt like the club didn’t really value his talents which is why he decided to leave Chelsea.

Chelsea didn’t really give De Bruyne a chance

Jose Mourinho is an excellent manager but over the years he has collected a lot of criticism. He has been known to put everything on the current season than to build for the next one.

The Standard has shed some light on De Bruyne’s last conversation with Jose. Jose called me into his office in December. He had some papers in front of him, and he said, ‘One assist. Zero goals. Ten recoveries’.

“It took me a minute to understand what he was doing. Then he started reading the stats of the other attacking forwards. “Jose was just kind of waiting for me to say something, and finally I said, ‘But… some of these guys have played 15, 20 games. I’ve only played three. So it’s going to be different, no?’ – De Bruyne told Sky Sports.

That’s not really fair for De Bruyne and he has a point because he wasn’t really getting game time to perform. Initially, the plan was to send him on a loan spell but after the incident, De Bruyne didn’t feel like staying at Chelsea.

The player asked for a move away from the club soon after. De Bruyne went on to explain that he needed a fresh start. It was a low moment in his career but the player had confidence in his ability to play.

It’s really amazing for him as to how things turned out. He is now a part of one of the biggest clubs in Europe and has a lot of accolades under his belt. The player has almost won it all, the only 2 things left for him would be the World Cup and the Champions League.
