The Red Devils were keen to sign a new center-back this summer and were even linked with 4-5 different CBs, only to miss out on every single one of them.
Manchester United have started their Premier League campaign with a 2-1 victory against Leicester City. But that has not brought a big smile on the faces of Red Devils supporters. Reason? – United’s disappointing transfer window.
No New Center-back!
The Old Trafford outfit signed Fred, Diogo Dalot, and a backup goalkeeper Lee Grant in the summer. But Mourinho’s biggest requirement, a new centre-back was not fulfilled by the board. United was linked with Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire, Yerri Mina, Jerome Boateng and Diego Godin. But in the end, they failed to sign any one of them.
Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand recently commented on the transfer mishap at his former club. “I was in favor of bringing Toby Alderweireld from Spurs,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“When playing regularly, I think he’s within the top two or three center-halfs in the country, in this league. I think he’s a fantastic player, he proved it again at the World Cup after not playing so many games last season.”
Harry Maguire was another option for the Red Devils after his heroics in Russia. But the United legend wants his compatriot to spend another season at Leicester. “Maguire had a fantastic tournament in Russia. I just think for his development another season at Leicester, honing his craft within the Premier League, would be best for him from a personal standpoint for him.”
Manchester United was also linked with Raphael Varane but Ferdinand does not think Real Madrid will sell the Frenchman. “The likes of Varane, who has proved himself to be one of the best defenders on the planet right now, I think he will be too far to go and get him, the amount of money. I don’t think Real Madrid would sell.” Said the United legend.

Manchester United will have to continue the season with Phil Jones, Smalling, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof as their center-backs after the transfer window closed on 9th August. The Red Devils will face Brighton in the second matchday.
The Red Devils have clearly made a huge mess of their transfer targets and could not land a single one of them in the end. But to be honest, the situation is not as bad as Mourinho is making it, United can still fight in the league with the resources at his disposal.
