A week ago, Warwickshire Cricket Club completed the signing of India’s Test batsman Hanuma Vihari. The English county side announced that India’s middle-order batsman would make his debut against Nottinghamshire.
The 27-year-old cricketer also became the first Indian to pen a red-ball agreement with a County club this season. The specialist batsman who made his Test debut against England went unsold in the mini IPL 2021 auction that took place in Chennai.
Most of his teammates are quite busy in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League. Vihari last played the cash-rich Indian Premier League in 2019 for Delhi Capitals. He was also expected to be recruited in the auction this time.
However, franchises didn’t show any sign of interest to sign him. In order to keep himself busy and to improve his batting skills, he has signed up with Warwickshire in County Championship.
Vihari has played a substantial role for the Indian national cricket team for quite some time. Had it not been for his injury, he would have been a part of the recently-concluded Test series against England.
He played one of the top knocks of his cricketing career in the third Test match against Australia. Vihari showcased his patience in the SCG Test as he batted for almost 4 hours alongside Ravichandran Ashwin. Thanks to both these players as India pulled off a draw.
Vihari takes a screamer on his debut
Vihari’s team Warwickshire locked horns with Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. Meanwhile, Nottinghamshire were reduced to 63 for 4. However, captain Steven Mullaney and Joe Clarke started to take the game away from the opposition as they went past the 100-run mark.
Just as when they were going on the right track, Vihari got rid of Mullaney with an acrobatic effort. Mullaney smashed a slower ball off William Rhodes’ bowling towards the leg-side. Meanwhile, Vihari who was at mid-wicket jumped to perfection and took a one-handed catch.
