Valverde accepts his chances of being sacked after losing to Atletico Madrid in Super Copa in the semi-final.
Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde might lose out on his job before summer after the club’s poor run of form. The Catalonian side lost the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Atletico Madrid on Thursday. They have won just one out of their five games in all competitions. According to the reports, his future at the club will be decided in a board meeting on Monday.
Over the past couple of years, Barcelona has failed to perform at the European stage despite spending heavily in the transfer windows. Valverde has often been criticized for his poor man-management and over-dependence on Lionel Messi.
Valverde’s start to the year wasn’t really convincing. The top-placed Barcelona dropped points against an Espanyol side which is at the lowest position in La Liga. Barca was 2-1 up till the 88th minute before they conceded the equalizer due to lack of defensive organization. On a similar note, late goals cost them the match against Atletico where they repeated the same mistakes again.
“It [talks about sacking] is inevitable, but I will do my job” – Valverde
During a post-match conference, the Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde described the ongoing situation at the club.
“Coaches always move with the idea of working hard and giving everything in every game. We know what football is like, that there is always permanent instability. When the results are bad or when you lose, as has happened tonight, I suppose we will talk about this and other things.”
Real Madrid had already qualified for the final after defeating Valencia. Barca could have made it an El Clasico final. Their game against Atletico was evenly matched and goalless at half-time. Till the 80th minute, they were 2-1 up. But goals from Alvaro Morata and Angel Correa in the last few minutes did the job for Simeone’s side who will face the Los Blancos in a Madrid Derby final.
