Konstantinos Manolas has broken Arsenal and Chelsea hearts by signing a new five year contract with Serie A giants AS Roma, as confirmed by recent reports.
The 26 year old centre-back was a target of both the London based clubs, but has now signed a new deal with the Romans, which might end all speculations of his potential move to England in the near future. The defensive superstar now has a new contract with his current club which will see him remain in the Italian capital till June, 2022.
The player moved to the Stadio Olimpico back in 2014 from Greek outfit Olympiacos and has since then caught the attention of the English sides, especially the Gunners and the Blues, who are looking to add him amongst their ranks.
However, the player has now decided to remain with Roma and will focus on his career under Eusebio Di Francesco, for the time being. This will be a major blow to the ambitions of Arsene Wenger and Antonio Conte, who were looking to add more defenders to their current squad and strengthen it. It means that the two managers will now have to look at other alternatives to sign, instead of the Greece international, who was on their target list. The player, who has made 144 appearances for Roma, was happy to sign the new deal, with sporting director Monchi also reciprocating the same joy at extending his stay at the club.
The star is quite experienced and both teams are in need of more central defenders, as they look to win more titles this term. However, if he is happy with his current club, there is no point wasting more time on him and the best thing to do would be to look elsewhere and find an alternative.
Injuries and poor form have been the main reasons why the Londoners have dropped some crucial points and are lagging behind by a considerable margin, with Manchester City enjoying themselves at the summit of the top flight of English football. Consistency will be a key for both Arsenal and Chelsea, if they wish to put up a serious challenge and make an impact in the present campaign.
