After the signing of Fred and Diego Dalot, Manchester United have now filled the void left by the retirement of Michael Carrick and the Red Devils will now look to fortify their defence, by signing a centre-back as a priority.
The Premier League giants ended the previous campaign, without any silverware and will want to change things now, as Jose Mourinho looks to win more titles.
The Portuguese manager has already left his mark on the current transfer window, though the work is still not done yet, as he looks to sign a defender to strengthen his back-line, despite having five players who can play as a centre-back.
With an unofficial deadline of 15th June set in their mind, which is the date when the pre-season training starts, it seems that the club is going all guns blazing at this point in time.
Though they are looking for some other defensive options as well, their priority will be fortifying the central positions first, which has been a top concern for the club.
Mourinho will need more reliable stars who can help him strengthen his squad and for that purpose he will look to bring in Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, whom Spurs’ value at £70m.
Jerome Boateng of Bayern Munich is also an option, with the defensive superstar not too pleased at present, playing for the Bundesliga champs, it seems.
Other options include Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane and Kalidou Koulibaly, with the likes of Milan Skriniar, Alessio Romagnoli, Jose Gimenez and Caglar Soyuncu also on their radar, though it is still not clear whom they will sign.
There have been problems with the like of Smalling, Jones and co., who have struggled in recent seasons and it is high time to get things sorted out within the club. Mourinho has always been known for a solid defence and he would surely not be happy with United’s defensive performances. He will look to sign more stars to change that now and if he can add a player like Alderweireld, things might really improve for the Premier League giants. It will not be easy for United though, as Spurs will want to hold on to their star and other clubs are interested in his services as well.
