Blow For Manchester United As another Target Extends Deal

The Red Devils have received a massive setback after Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez signed a contract extension with the La Liga club.

It seems that Manchester United are unlucky in this transfer window because their key targets are pledging their allegiance before the Premier League club can make a deal. United boss Jose Mourinho has identified that he needs to strengthen up his defensive line in order to compete for the Premier League title against local neighbours and champions Manchester City.

The Portuguese boss had targeted Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti for quite a while but the Frenchman decided to commit his future at the Camp Nou with the La Liga champions. And Manchester United suffered another blow as another La Liga defender, Jose Gimenez decided to stay put in Spain.

Gimenez Signs New Atletico Deal-

Atletico Madrid was glad to announce that Gimenez will be extending his stay with the Spanish outfit which will tie him down at Madrid until 2023 which boosted his release clause from £57 million to £105 million. However, this was bad news for Manchester United, who had set their sights on bringing the highly rated defender to Old Trafford.

The 23-year-old centre-back was a key member for Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid this season playing 38 matches in all competitions and aiding them to lift the Europa League title. Gimenez has been solid in Simeone’s water-tight back line which drew interest from La Liga and local rivals Real Madrid, English sides, Arsenal Chelsea as well as Manchester United.

United are also linked with Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld, Real Madrid star Raphael Varane and will try their luck at alternatives in order for the ‘Special One’ to win the Premier League with Manchester United.

Author’s Take-

Gimenez would have been a great addition to Mourinho’s defensive line because he is extremely strong and a bit crazy as well. Mourinho would have loved to sign the Uruguayan but now needs to look at different defenders before the season begins.
