In the 14th over of the second innings Faf du Plessis was declared out by the third umpire and later was overturned following DRS review. Bizzare things happened over a very short period of time during the fifth delivery of the 14th over from Meredith.
It was complete domination from Chennai Super Kings on the eight game of IPL 2021 against Punjab Kings. Franchisees have struggled to put runs on the board in the past two games at Wankhede Stadium this season. Luckily Dhoni won the toss and he chose to bowl first as expected.
The pitch did help seamers at the start and had little movement as well. Dhoni did use his usual powerplay weapon Deepak Chahar to pickup early wickets. The Indian pacer didn’t disappoint his skipper this time and delivered an impressive match winning spell for the yellow army.
Deepak Chahar banished Punjab Kings top order in no time before the powerplay and finished off his spell of four overs as well. Punjab Kings registered a below par score of 106 runs on the board after 20 overs. Sharukh Khan waged a lone battle for the Kings, who scored 47 of 36 deliveries.
Umpire’s bizzare decision for Faf du Plessis:
Chennai Super Kings openers Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad entered the field with a smaller target in front of them. The Super Kings did start slow with Gaikwad struggling to time the ball. Pacers Mohammed Shami and Arshdeep Singh bowled extremely well in the powerplay to contain runs.
However, Meredith and Richardson started leaking runs for the Punjab Kings. Moeen Ali, who came in at third played some timing shots to take the game away from KL Rahul’s side. The partnership between Moeen Ali and Faf du Plessis did work out well for the Chennai Super Kings in this particular fixture.
Although, Ali couldn’t complete his half-century and fell prey to Tamil Nadu’s leggie Murugan Ashwin. But, South African batsmen stood strong till the end to clinch the victory for the Chennai side. The game also marked skipper Dhoni’s 200th game for the franchise across all tournaments.
The bizarre thing happened on the fifth ball of 14th over, when Meredith bowled a fantastic bouncer to du Plessis. The ball went straight to KL Rahul gloves and CSK needed just six runs at this stage. Punjab Kings’ went with massive appeal for caught behind.
Main umpire (Anil Chaudhary) did not signal anything, he went towards the leg-umpire (Anil Dandekar) and eventually referred the decision to third umpire. However, the check was for no-ball, but the third umpire judged it as legal delivery and asked on field umpire to signal it as out. The batsmen was shocked and went on with DRS review and the decision was again overturned in du Plessis favor.
