Tottenham star returns to matchday squad after more than a year

Mauricio Pochettino has named Argentinian midfielder Erik Lamela on the bench for the game against Leicester City

Leicester City play Tottenham at King Power in a late Tuesday night kick off. Leicester City have had a tough time this season. They have already sacked manager Craig Shakespeare and are currently 12th in the Premier League table. Claude Puel replaced Shakespeare and has steadied the ship a bit.

Tottenham meanwhile are looking to win an away game after losing two on the bounce against Manchester United and Arsenal. The last time Tottenham lost three consecutive away games was in 2014 under Tim Sherwood.

The Lily Whites welcome Erik Lamela back into the first team fold. The Argentinian midfielder has missed more than a year of football owing to a series of troubling hip injuries. Now that he has returned, Twitter is starting to see its funny side. Here are some of the most entertaining tweets after Tottenham’s matchday squad’s announcement:

Lamela moved to Tottenham from Roma in the summer of 2013. He was Spurs biggest buy at that time for a record fee of £27 million without add-ons. He was a part of the mass influx of players after Gareth Bale’s departure to Real Madrid. The 25-year-old has had a stop-start career at Tottenham, never really winning the die-hard fans of the club.

Author’s Take

Erik Lamela will not set the world alight but he will certainly act as a great squad player for Spurs. Pochettino will be happy to have him back and raring to go. Lamela can play on either wing or act as a creator behind Harry Kane to provide backup for Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen. Although he has not been able to fulfil the huge expectations that were placed on him after his move to England, he has still conjured up some moments of magic. After all who can forget his wonder goal in the Europa League against Asteras Tripoli.
