David Alaba has won it all at club level football with Bayern Munich. The Austrian international has won nine Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies as well. Despite such massive success, he is only 28-years-old and now he is in his peak years. The defender hardly gets the credit he deserves for his excellent performances over the years.
Pep Guardiola once said that “He is our god” referring to Alaba as a god, because of his ability to play in different positions. Last season he even proved that as well. He effortlessly transitioned himself from a left-back to a centre-back as Bayern won the treble. At one glance, one could even say that he has been playing in that position for a long time.
The former Hoffenheim defender has spent a big chunk of his career in the Bundesliga. However, at the age of 28, he might be tempted to try his luck somewhere else. Alaba’s former teammates Thiago and Bastian Schweinsteiger have also done the same. Premier League could be a destination for him with Chelsea interested in him.
It has been less than two weeks since Frank Lampard was sacked and Thomas Tuchel’s has transitioned very well. Under him the team looks better, however, it could just be a honeymoon period for him as well. Tuchel has managed some of the biggest stars in world football and everyone has excellent things to say about him as well.
Tuchel to hijack David Alaba’s move to Real Madrid:
According to The Guardian quoted by The Metro, the Blues are serious about an ambitious hijack of Alaba’s move to Real Madrid. The current situation is that the Austrian is in the final few months of his contract with Bayern Munich. He is free to negotiate and agree on a pre-contract arrival with any club outside Germany.
Bayern Munich have tried to persuade him to stay but now it looks like they are destined to lose him for free. There have been rumours that he has already agreed on a move to Real Madrid next summer. In recent years, Chelsea have struggled defensively and Tuchel is said to be a big fan of Alaba. The former Dortmund manager wants to strengthen his backline.
They did sign Thiago Silva but now he is 36-years-old. The Brazilian is no longer at his best and he was always a short-term option. Last summer they invested heavily but centre-back is still a position where they need a quality signing. Alaba is also capable of playing as left and even in the midfield as he has often done in the past.
Not only Alaba, Bayern Munich’s other centre backs Niklas Sule and Jerome Boateng have also been linked to Chelsea. Sule is currently out of favour at the Allianz Arena, while Jerome Boateng is in his final few months of a new contract as well.
12th Man opinion:
Recently there was a report from Marca, which said that Los Blancos are no longer the favourites to sign Alaba. It stated that, if a better option comes from England, Alaba would be open to moving to the Premier League as well. While Barcelona is also said to be an interested party. The race for Austrian’s signature is now heating up as his contract with Bayern comes to an end.
The first thing for Chelsea to even consider about signing Alaba should be to qualify for the Champions League. It is impossible that he would want to join the Blues without Champions League football. Also, they have a disadvantage when compared to other clubs. Currently, under Tuchel, the Blues are in the process of building a team that can win trophies.
While Real Madrid is always favourites to win big trophies. In a choice between Barca and Madrid, it is likely that he will choose the white jersey. The Catalans are currently in a big mess and without Lionel Messi’s future uncertain, they are not in a position to attract Alaba. Thus out of these three, Real Madrid looks to be the favourites.
However, there is one club that can pip all three of them. Manchester City needs a left-back with Benjamin Mendy not being good enough. They have the financial muscle to offer him big wages and Pep Guardiola is already such a big fan of Alaba. Not only this the Austrian also admires his former boss very much. With big Arab money and Guardiola, they will always be able to challenge for titles as well.
