It has been nothing less than a fairy tale for Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel. The German was sacked this season by PSG and in January appointed by the Blues. The Premier League side have sacked Frank Lampard and Tuchel came in as a replacement. The German initially said that that he will build a team no one wants to play against.
So far he is proving what he said initially. Chelsea defeated Manchester City to reach the FA Cup final. Now they have beaten Real Madrid as well to reach the Champions League final. However, Tuchel still wants to add more strength to his squad next season. He would want that his team is again able to compete for trophies next season. Thus he now wants his former player to join him at Stamford Bridge.
The PSG Tuchel wants at Chelsea:
According to Sunday World, the former Dortmund manager is keen to reunite with Marquinhos. The Brazilian was a regular for Tuchel during his time with PSG. The pair won two Ligue 1 titles, one French Cup and one French League Cup together.
The report states that the manager has himself recommended the name of the former Roma defender. Chelsea want to strengthen their defensive line for next season and they are looking at other players as well.
The Blues have managed their finances very well despite the coronavirus pandemic. Many of their rivals are feeling the financial wrath of the pandemic but Chelsea are in a comfortable position. Thus they will have the money next season to bring in top players.
Why Tuchel wants Marquinhos at Chelsea?
The first reason as to why he wants the Brazilian is that he has already played under him. Thus he will be aware of want the manager wants from him, what could be his tactics etc. Also, Tuchel is aware of the player’s ability himself. He is a quality player and he is still 26 years old.
He is yet to reach his peak but he has gained good experience at the top-flight level. The second is that Chelsea will need defensive reinforcements for next season. This is because Thiago Silva is not getting any younger. He is 36 years old and soon the Blues will have to replace him.
Marquinhos can become the defensive linchpin for the Blues in the long term as well and replace Silva. This can be seen from his statistics. This season despite making 38 appearances he only has 2 yellow cards. With a passing rate of 91.9%, he is dribbled past 0.4% times per game and he makes 0.6 blocks per game.
The potential cost of signings the PSG defender?
According to Transfermarkt, he is valued at around $73 million. Considering his age, potential, quality, and importance to PSG it seems like a fair evaluation. Not only this, the Blues will have to pay for his agent fees and they will have to reach an agreement with him for his wages at the club.
In other words, it will be a costly affair for the Blues. Not only this, questions will be asked can he be the Van Dijk for Chelsea. Previously Manchester United also tried to do something similar with Maguire. The Englishman has been good but clearly not worth the money, Red Devils have spent on him.
It will be a considerable risk for the Blues. A potential alternative could be to bring back Fikayo Tomori who is on loan at AC Milan. He is another player who has the potential to be as good or even better than Marquinhos in the future. Though statistically, it will be difficult to prove this but there is no question about Tomori’s potential as well.
12th Man Opinion
As for Chelsea fans, they would be delighted to see the Brazilian join the club. However, they would not want their team to break the bank for him. Other players like him are available for a less price.
