Leicester City won their first FA Cup in 137 years at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night. The Foxes defeated Thomas Tuchel’ Chelsea by a goal to nil. Belgian international Youri Tielemans hit a belter of a shot to put them through.
Chelsea on the other hand will be dejected after dreams of repeating the 2012 season came crashing down. However, the Blues still have the UEFA Champions League final in two weeks and will focus on that.
They have now lost consecutive FA Cup finals having fallen to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal last year under Frank Lampard. Certain decisions were definitely made which will make Chelsea fans feel they were hard done.
But part of the fault is on their part as well. For most of the game, Chelsea lacked the edge to create clear-cut opportunities and definitely lacked a solid striker upfront. Timo Werner was far from effective. In fact, the entire Chelsea front three hardly did anything in the first half.
The Pensioners must’ve been jumping up and down their seats when Ben Chilwell equalised in the 90th minute against his former club. However, all their celebrations had to be stopped as VAR overturned the decision by a matter of millimeters.
This current system wherein the minute differences are taken into consideration are completely changing the game. It wasn’t a clear-cut offside decision and had to be magnified to ridiculous proportions.
Thomas Tuchel says Chelsea were ‘unlucky’
In the post-match conference, German coach Thomas Tuchel did speak about the handball call leading to Tielemans’s goal. Tuchel said that in the match Chelsea needed a bit of luck but they didn’t have it. Additionally, he also praised the quality of the goal from Tielemans.
Chelsea had a couple of chances in the final quarter of the game. First, it was Ben Chilwell’s header which was clawed out by Kasper Schmeichel. Then Mason Mount hit a sweet strike with his left foot but Schmeichel extended athletically to deny him.
Thomas Tuchel was quizzed on the handball before Tielemans’s goal. He says that he didn’t notice it at first but after being pointed out by his assistant and players on the pitch, he saw it.
Tuchel also added that in such decisions you need a bit of luck and that they didn’t get. Moreover, he also pointed out that in the Arsenal game they had a handball call just around the penalty box but that was ignored.
Of course we’re disappointed but we’re not angry, not with our performance and not with our boys,’ Tuchel said.
‘I think this performance in this game is enough to win. Today we were simply unlucky, we’ve never hidden the fact you need luck to win at this level. All the time you needed a certain momentum, you need some little details and decision-making.
