Thomas Tuchel’ Chelsea side defeated FC Porto 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League on Thursday night. The Blues registered a healthy two-goal advantage going into the second leg. Moreover, it’s two away goals to their name even though the match was played out at a neutral venue.
Thomas Tuchel presented a much-changed side to the one which faced defeat from West Bromwich Albion. Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, and Andreas Christensen all getting starts.
Even though on paper Chelsea are the stronger side you can never underestimate your opponent’s in the UEFA Champions League. Anything can happen. Hence it was quite important for Chelsea to get a strong start in the match.
For most of the game, the sides matched each other equally. Both FC Porto and Chelsea had an equal number of chances. But the difference lay in the fact that Chelsea were clinical in their finishing while the Portuguese club was not.
Mason Mount opened the scoring with a piece of individual brilliance for Chelsea. Jorginho passed the ball to Mount who took it the first time and performed a turn instantaneously to leave behind the defender.
This opened up the space for him and he took the shot first time to fire past the goalkeeper. Many can say that the Porto goalkeeper Marchesin could’ve done better, but nevertheless it remained advantage Chelsea.
Thomas Tuchel reveals player reactions after the defeat against West Bromwich Albion
Fc Porto had a host of chances and they should’ve equalised at least with one of them. Defender Pepe had an open header in the final moments of the first half which saw Mendy diving to his left to make the save.
But the most probable chance came through striker Marega who caught Antonio Rudiger napping at the back and went through on goal. However once again Eduoard Mendy quickly closed down the angle and blocked the shot.
Left-back Ben Chilwell put the final nail in the coffin as he scored Chelsea’s second in the 85th minute. Chilwell took the ball off Jesus Corona and went all the way past the goalkeeper to slot the ball in. Understandably coach Thomas Tuchel is extremely happy with the performance. Tuchel says the reaction of the players after the loss against West Bromwich Albion made him sure of the win against Porto.

The result is excellent,” Tuchel added. “It was a tough match against a strong Porto side who are very hard to play against and have good individual skills. “They are a proud club, a proud team, an emotional team, and there were many moments where we suffered.
