Manchester United are long-term admirers of Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland. Their interest in Haaland goes back to his playing days at Salzburg. United was very close to signing him last January. But the Norwegian chose the German club over them.
And United are now regretting not closing that deal. Haaland is one of the stand-out strikers in the world since joining Dortmund. He has scored 33 goals in 32 games this season. His 10 goals this season in the Champions League make him the top scorer of the competition.
This run of incredible form has been him attract interest from various elite European clubs like Manchester City, Real Madrid, Chelsea, FC Barcelona, and obviously Manchester United.
He has a release clause of £75 million in his Dortmund which comes into effect in the summer of 2022. But the German club will not sell him for anything less than £130 million this summer.
Dortmund might sell Haaland this summer
Last week, Dortmund’s managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke revealed that they are preparing their next season with Haaland. But that situation might change if Dortmund fails to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Dortmund are fifth in the Bundesliga table, ten points behind fourth-placed Frankfurt at the time of writing. And there are only seven games remaining. They also suffered a 2-1 away defeat to Premier League side Manchester City in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Moreover, Haaland’s father Alf-Inge along with super-agent Mino Raiola went to discuss any potential deal for the 20-year old with top clubs last week.
As it stands, Dortmund’s chances of playing Champions League football look very slim. There only chance of it is by winning the competition this season, which is a huge task given the quality of teams that are left in the competition. And if they fail to do so, they may be forced to sell their prized asset this summer.
Four United players included in Haaland swap-deal
According to the Daily Express, Dortmund may accept four United players in any potential deal for Haaland. The four players mentioned are Donny van de Beek, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and surprisingly Amad Diallo.
Donny van de Beek’s first season at Old Trafford has not been great. The Dutch midfielder arrived from Ajax for £40 million but has only played a handful of games. Dortmund are keen admirers of the 23-year old and will take him if any opportunity arrives.
Similar to van de Beek, Lingard struggled for game time at United this season, before moving to West Ham in January. Since then, he has been one of the most in-form players in the league. He looks rejuvenated at the London club. His future at United is still unclear but a move abroad looks extremely unlikely.
Unlike Lingard, Martial has played plenty of games for United this season. But the Frenchman has suffered for form for large parts of the season. He has come under some heavy criticism for his performances, which might force him to leave the Theatre of Dreams. Amad Diallo was a surprise inclusion in the list, given he only joined the club this January. But a loan move to Dortmund might help him develop before playing first-team football for United.
