Manchester United are eyeing loads of player ahead of the summer transfer window. And as per the latest reports, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expecting a move for at least three of his top targets.
The Red Devils are enjoying a fine campaign. They comfortably sit second in the Premier League table, with five games remaining. But they are quite behind the would-be Premier League champions in Manchester City. The Citizens will become champions if they win their next game against Crystal Palace and Manchester United lose at home to Liverpool.
United are still in the Europa League and are firm favourites to win the competition. They face the Italian side AS Roma in the semi-finals in the midweek.
But in order to close the gap between them and their noisy neighbours, United have to spend big this summer.
Solskjaer will get his targets at United?
Solskjaer needs to fill some big holes at United and revamp his squad ahead of next season. A centre-back, defensive midfielder, right-winger are the primary positions the Norwegian wants to improve on.
And if Edinson Cavani leaves Old Trafford this summer, a striker to replace him will also be key. Solskjaer believes that the Uruguayan has already made up his mind not to extend his contract and leave the club in the summer.
Despite the havoc caused by the United’s involvement in the European Super League and the ultimate consequence of penalties, Solskjaer has been told by the Glazers that they will back him to improve his team in the summer transfer window.
United have also suffered heavy losses due to the ongoing pandemic, but again the owners will provide the necessary funds to reinforce the current squad.
United to bid for three players:
According to The Star Sunday, Solskjaer expects the club to make a bid for Raphael Varane, Jack Grealish, and Erling Haaland this summer.
As said, if Cavani leaves, the club will have to sign a top striker. And the name mentioned is Dortmund’s forward Erling Haaland, who has been on United’s radar for quite some time and nearly joined the club last year. The Norwegian has been in the scintillating form again this season, scoring 35 goals in all competitions. He is also the Champions League top-scorer this campaign, with 10 goals to his name. The fee quoted to bring Haaland to the Theatre of Dreams is around £150 million.
Next on the list is Aston Villa’s talisman Jack Grealish. The Englishman has been out of action since February but has still put up incredible performances for an inconsistent Villa side. Just like Haaland, United have been monitoring Grealish for a long time. And the Red Devils are expected to go for the 25-year old again this summer, who will cost around £80 million.
Finally, United want a top centre-back to partner with club captain Harry Maguire. And Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane is top of their list. The Frenchman’s contract at the Santiago Bernabeu will expire in 2022. And there are no signs for them extending Varane’s contract. The Madrid club will ask for around £43 million for him this summer, then the risk of losing him for free the season after.
