The Blues manager Antonio Conte has stated that Chelsea will not have a chance to beat Manchester United if they play the way they did against Newcastle United.
Chelsea have had an underwhelming campaign this season and finished outside the top four thus ineligible for the Champions League next season. The West London side had the slightest of hope to clinch the fourth spot but made a mess of it in their final few games.
An impressive 1-0 win over Liverpool at Stamford Bridge allowed Chelsea an opening into the top 4 but a 1-1 draw against Huddersfield Town pushed back the Blues further. And to add insult to their injury, former Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez’ Newcastle United stunned Antonio Conte’s side at Saint James’ Park by winning 3-0 and sending Chelsea to the Europa League.
Chelsea will miss out on Champions League football for the second time in three seasons but still have some hope of salvaging some glory at the end of this campaign by facing Manchester United in the FA Cup final next week. However, Conte has warned his players that they need to show a bit more fight against the Red Devils or they stand no chance of securing silverware next week.
Conte’s Newcastle Post Match Thoughts-
Speaking at a presser after the Newcastle defeat, the 48-year-old said, ‘For the next game, for sure we must change, If we think we can play a game like this in the final of the FA Cup then we don’t have a chance.”
Conte went on to add that the Stamford Bridge faithful deserve some joy and Chelsea need to change their approach in the coming few days, “We have six days to change our approach and desire and will to fight… Our fans deserve more than today.”
Some good news for the Blues would be the fact that United are also struggling to play good football this season under Jose Mourinho. However, United did finish 2nd in the Premier League and can be a real threat for Chelsea in the attack. Conte needs to address his team well and prepare them better than they did against Newcastle United.
