Serie A star is interested in a move to Barcelona and has reportedly turned down a lucrative move away from his current move.
Barcelona needs reinforcements, despite bringing in Yerry Mina the club still lacks defensive steel as they have only the likes of Samuel Umtiti, Gerard Pique, Thomas Vermaelen and Mina himself, having already lost Javier Mascherano to the Chinese Super League. However, the La Liga giants have been linked with moves for Stefan De Vrij, Matthijs De Ligt and even Manchester City star Ayermic Laporte before the Citizens paid his release clause.
But now it looks like according to reports from Football Italia Lazio star Stefan de Vrij is interested in a potential move to Barcelona and is reportedly considering a proposal from the Catalan giants. The 26-year-old has been Lazio’s rock at the back since his arrival in 2014 and has even gone on to make more than 100 appearances for them scoring eight goals. The Dutchman is out of contract at the end of the season and many have expected him to sign with rivals Inter Milan.
Sporting Director Igli Tare has already revealed that De Vrij has rejected a contract extension and the club has already withdrawn it’s offer of a lucrative new deal. The 26-year-old revealed in an Instagram post saying “It has been a very difficult period full of speculations on my future to come to this point that nobody desired. Unfortunately we were not able to find a satisfying agreement for both parties due to various reasons.
I understand the disappointment of the Lazio fans very good and it hurts me leaving in this way. Even though I am very happy and I feel at home here, sometimes we need to get out of our comfort zone to achieve our desired goals. I will be forever grateful to Lazio and to the fans for always being there for me, for the trust and opportunities given. I have always tried to demonstrate that by giving the best of me and I will keep doing that until the end. Thank you, Stefan.”
Barcelona have interrupted the advanced negotiations between Inter and Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij (26), who the Milanese side want to prise away for free as his contract runs out at the end of the season. Barca are also keen to bring the centre-back #fcblive [gds]

But while Inter Milan does have a deal worked out between them and the Dutchman, things could go south if Barcelona decides to enter the race. While Stefan de Vrij would become an immediate starter at the San Siro side, the club cannot exactly offer him Champions League football with Inter Milan sitting fourth at the moment, four points behind third-place AS Roma. Barcelona has been linked with moves for other Serie A stars including Juventus’ Paulo Dybala and Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi among others.
While a move to Inter Milan does look like the likely option for Stefan de Vrij, the lure and attraction of playing for a big club like Barcelona is not easy to turn down especially when they offer Champions League football. However, in the end maybe staying at Inter Milan and helping them fight for next season would be better than warming the bench at Barcelona.
