Sarri unsatisfied with Chelsea’s defence; wants these centre-backs at Stamford Bridge

If and when Maurizio Sarri lands the Chelsea job, he will try to bring in Raul Albiol and Daniel Rugani

Chelsea’s current defence was made to look better than it was by Conte and his style of play. But with Maurizio Sarri expected to replace him now that Napoli have reduced their asking price, a change of personnel may be needed. David Luiz has already attracted interest from the likes of Arsenal and Napoli of all clubs, with the Blues even rejecting a bid from their London rivals. While Cahill has fallen down the pecking order and Rudiger has his good and bad days. Sarri, consequently, will look to bring a couple of centre-backs according to Sportitalia and Calciomercato.

Raul Albiol is the first name mentioned on the list, with the 32-year-old currently on Napoli’s books. He was an ever-present under Sarri next season. Should the Italian demand his signing, the former Real Madrid man has a release clause of just €6 million.

The other name is of Daniel Rugani. The young centre-back played under Sarri during the former’s loan spell at Empoli. He currently has a contract with Juventus that runs until 2021 and at just 23-years of age he is seen as the future of Juventus’ as well as Italy’s defence. However, his progress has stalled over the past two seasons, making the transfer a feasible option.

Another name on Sarri’s wishlist is that of Kalidou Koulibaly according to SportItalia. Koulibaly, however, will cost much more than either of the names mentioned before. Napoli currently values him at €120 million according to RAI Sport, a sum that the Blues will be most definitely unwilling to pay.

Author’s Take

Rugani, Albiol and Koulibaly will act as an upgrade on most of the Chelsea defenders. If the Chelsea board grants Sarri’s wishes of bringing a new centre-back then it will be only a matter of value that each present. Albiol at 32 will not be a long-term option while Koulibaly’s asking price is too high at the moment. For me, Rugani is the perfect option. If they can get him for a modest enough fee, he can shore up Chelsea’s defence for years to come alongside Andreas Christensen.
