Premier League legend Rio Ferdinand has urged Chelsea to sign Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero this summer. The Argentine will leave the Etihad for free this summer after the expiration of his contract.
Aguero has spent the past decade with the Cityzens, having arrived in the summer of 2011 from Atletico Madrid. The 32-year-old striker has scored 261 goals in 395 appearances for City and is also the club’s all-time top scorer.
During his time in Manchester, Aguero has won the Premier League four times, FA Cup once and the league cup six times. He is also fourth in Premier League’s all-time top goal-scorer with 187 goals to his name.
Aguero has already won the League Cup this season, with another Premier League title imminent. And he has a chance to end his glorious career at City by winning the club’s first-ever Champions League. City won their semi-final tie against Paris Saint-Germain 4-1 on aggregate, confirming their place in the final of the competition to be played in Istanbul later this month.
Ferdinand wants Aguero at Stamford Bridge:
This will be Aguero’s final season for City after all parties decided not to extend his stay beyond this season. This has seen him attract interest from various elite European clubs including FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. A return to Argentina is also on the card.
But former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has urged Chelsea to do all they can to sign Aguero this summer. Ferdinand believes that Aguero is a perfect striker for the Blues.
The United great thinks that Chelsea and Aguero are a match made in heaven. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said:
“I think he [Aguero] stays in the Premier League. If I’m Chelsea, I take him now. If I’m Chelsea, I go and get him…quick!”
Aguero to Chelsea makes sense?
Chelsea are in the market for a new striker with manager Thomas Tuchel keen to make some attacking reinforcements this season. The German coach is not particularly happy with the attacking players he has at the moment, with Timo Werner, Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham all failing to nail down the number nine position under him.
The Blues have identified Erling Haaland as their prime target for the summer. But the Norwegian’s club Borussia Dortmund are adamant that they will only accept a fee of upwards of £100 million. This means Chelsea will have to smash their transfer record to land the 20-year-old attacker. His agent Mino Raiola will also demand a high salary and agent fees, making the overall deal very expensive.
Haaland does have a release clause of £75 million which activates in the summer of 2022. This is where a deal for Aguero makes sense. He would cost absolutely nothing and it is believed that he is prepared to take a significant cut on his current wages, which is £230,000-a-week.
Aguero is injury-prone and has missed large parts of this season because of that. But he has vast Premier League experience and remains one of the best strikers in world football. Chelsea should sign Aguero on a one-year deal before going for Haaland in the summer of 2022 when his asking price drops.
