The Englishman was expected to be out of Stamford Bridge in January transfer window.
Chelsea had a mixed January transfer window. They did sign Pulisic, who is set to join them in summer. Chelsea also solved it’s striker problem by bringing Gonzalo Higuain. However, they did lose Cesc Fabregas. The Spaniard was the back up option for Jorginho. Chelsea did miss out on signing Paredes as he signed for Paris Saint Germain. Gary Cahill was expected to leave Chelsea on loan for the remainder of the season. However, he didn’t leave. Here’s the reason why Cahill didn’t leave Stamford Bridge.
Gary Cahill rejected Fulham move because he can sense Maurizio Sarri sacking. The Chelsea centre back rejected the chance to more to Premier League strugglers Fulham in the January window. And former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock thinks it might be because Cahill has noticed the patterns emerging where the Blues manager eventually ends up getting the sack.
Sarri appears to be on the ropes after publicly criticising his players and getting stuffed 4-0 by Bournemouth in midweek. Comparing Sarri’s first year to Pep Guardiola’s first at Manchester City, Warnock told 5Live, “The players are coming out now and challenging Sarri whereas they didn’t challenge Pep. They agreed with everything Pep said because they knew it was the right thing to do. Now with Sarri, when we go back to the Gary Cahill incident at this moment in time, he must be sat there thinking, ‘I’m not going because I’m getting a sense of something in this changing room that the players are not having this.’ ”
Ian Denis further added, “Cahill rejected an opportunity to go to Fulham so Cahill is going to be staying at Stamford Bridge then he’ll asses his option in the summer.”
Sarri clearly does not fancy Cahill and he’s admitted as much in the past.
It’s tough to believe Sarri getting the sack. Fulham being close to relegation could be the reason why Cahill rejected the move. However, Sarri at this moment is having only two players of his own, the rest of the team is Conte and Mourinho era players. Having said that, Sarri needs to interact with his players and change some of his methods which is including a plan b, rotating the squad and giving youngsters a chance.
