Jose Mourinho’s side has been linked with Toby Alderweirald, however, they already have a plan B in place.
Manchester United have already signed two players but are actively scouting for a centre back. Tottenham’s Toby Alderweirald has been mooted as a possible signing, however, talks with Spurs haven’t gone to plan as of yet. Therefore, the Red Devils are preparing a plan B as they have come up with a list of possible targets should the Alderweirald deal fall through.
United already have Alderweirald on their radar but are preparing other alternatives as well. The Belgian centre-back is not their only priority by any means, as Mourinho plans to add steel to his defence. As a consequence, they have drawn up a list of eight defenders as backups if the deal for Alderweirald fails to bear fruit.
United’s list of defensive targets
Mourinho led United to a second place finish and is ready to fight for the title next term. He needs a final few pieces of the puzzle and is hoping to add a defender to his roster. Alderweirald naturally, fits the bill but he is not the only man United are eyeing. Manchester Evening News reports the Red Devils have a list of eight alternatives for the Belgian.
A few names on the list are long-term targets like Raphael Varane and Jerome Boateng. Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly features on the list alongside Inter’s Milan Skriniar. Furthermore, Alessio Romagnoli, Jose Gimenez, and Caglar Soyuncu complete the wishlist. The club is not rushing things and will wait to see how things pan out with Alderweirald first.

United currently have five centre-backs in their squad and any possible addition will be the sixth man. If they succeed in their pursuits of the names listed above, it should be interesting to see who paves way for whom. Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof have been the brightest prospects for United. However, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo’s futures are unclear as of yet.
If United sign a centre-back for the third season in a row, they will have six men gunning for two spots. Hence one out of Jones, Rojo or Smalling will have to be cut off. In any case, the final call will be Mourinho’s and he never fails to surprise us does he?
