The arrival of Real Madrid to Anfield was not so welcoming as their team bus was attacked by the Liverpool supporters. The Reds have issued an apology to the visiting side which the club’s institutional relations director has confirmed to have received.
So the quarter-final fixture between the most injured teams has concluded and it was Real Madrid that prevailed the test. Real Madrid have regained their step in the Champions League after 3 long seasons. They are finally back in the semi-final stage where they will be facing Chelsea. Liverpool on the other hand will be without any trophy this season as the Champions League was the last competition they were alive in.
The game was somewhat lost by Liverpool in the 1st-leg itself. Their visit to the Alfredo Di Stefano was catastrophic. After having got the chance to finally get their revenge, they succumbed to their bad performance and were handed the defeat accordingly. They lost the 1st-leg 3-1, however, given the club’s history, they weren’t to be written off.
Liverpool had performed a comeback against Los Blanco’s fierce rivals when they overturned a 3 goal deficit. Keeping that in mind, Jurgen Klopp also sounded optimistic in the post-match interview after the 1st-leg. However, things didn’t turn out as expected as the hosts were not able to break the deadlock. The visitors held their stance as the match ended without a goal. But the 1st-leg result meant that Real Madrid will be cruising through.
It will be unfair to say that Liverpool didn’t put up a fight. But, they wasted every opportunity they got. Real Madrid came intending to defend their lead and they did exactly that. However, the Reds missed a lot of chances which if they had taken, a different result could have been seen.
Liverpool apology accepted by Real madrid
As Real Madrid approached Anfield they were swarmed by thousands of Liverpool fans. The fans lined the driveway through which the bus was supposed to arrive. The hostile reception not only blurred the driver’s vision when they passed through the red haze, but the outer layer of a window was also smashed during the time.
There was the usage of flares which caused the red flares as the fans were welcoming the home side. However, they also used firecrackers. As the visitors approached the window of the seat in which Zinedine Zidane was sitting was struck by something.
Various reports suggest different things. However, the final options have been narrowed down to either a firecracker hitting the bus or an angry fan throwing a bottle at the French coach. The Merseyside Police will be looking into this matter.
Whatever it was supposed to do has failed as all the players made it safely to the pitch. Moreover, they also won the match without the incident affecting them. Following the incident, Liverpool issued an apology for the distress caused to the team.
“We condemn unequivocally the actions that led to Real Madrid’s team bus being damaged during its arrival to Anfield this evening. It is totally unacceptable and shameful behaviour of a few individuals. We sincerely apologise to our visitors for any distress caused.
We will work together with Merseyside Police to establish the facts and identify those responsible for the damage.” – said the Liverpool authorities.
It also looks like Real Madrid have accepted the apology. The club’s director of institutional relations, Emilio Butraguenp has confirmed the receiving of the apology. As no further steps have been taken, it feels like both the clubs have mutually agreed with each other keeping their relationship unaffected.
