Thilo Kehrer is the latest in the conveyor belt of stars produced by Schalke which includes the likes of Manuel Neuer, Leroy Sane, Mesut Ozil and Julian Draxler
Thilo Kehrer has been a part of a successful Schalke campaign under Domenico Tedesco, where the club from the Ruhr Valley managed to finish second, above the likes of the local rivals Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig. If the latest reports from the Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo are to be believed, Real Madrid and Marcelino’s Valencia are now keen on the Central defender and have joined the race with Barcelona.
This is in addition to Barcelona and their serious interest in the teenager, whose deal expires in 2019 and hasn’t shown any interest in putting pen to paper despite the continued efforts of the Royal Blues. After joining the club from Stuttgart in 2012, he led the under-19s to the title in the 2014-15 season as Leroy Sane watched from the bench.
This paved a way to the first team in the following season though he could only muster an appearance from the bench. His career highlight came during when the Stefan Kuntz led side won the UEFA European U-21 Championship in Poland. The youngster since had been racking up the minutes under the 32-year-old Tedesco in their recently concluded campaign.
Eric Abidal has singled out the youngster for praise saying that the German has the all-around qualities to successfully wear the prestigious jersey at the Camp Nou. With Abidal rumoured to step in as the new Sporting Director at Barcelona, it is fair to expect them knocking the door for the German’s services.
Thilo Kehrer ticks all the boxes for a modern day center half – strength, awareness and striking versatility, having filled in eight different positions in his relatively short Bundesliga career. He is also known to have a cool head on his tender shoulders. Interests from Real Madrid and Valencia falls into Schalke’s hands, allowing them to push the asking price up considerably.
