Ravichandran Ashwin, the Premier off-spin bowler of the Indian team, is playing a match for India after about 10 months. Before the first Test against South Africa, he played the first Test of the series on the tour of Australia. He did not get a chance to play again in that four-match series and also stayed on the bench in both matches against West Indies in the Carribean.
Ravichandran Ashwin has given a statement on being away from the cricket field. Speaking at the press conference after the third day of the match against South Africa, Ashwin said about this
“It was very difficult for me to keep away from cricket. For this reason, I played wherever I got a chance to play. I tried and created an opportunity to play and play some county cricket for myself. Also played some league cricket in TNPL and Chennai. “
Ravichandran Ashwin also spent time with his family. He told that for almost 25 years he was not spending time with his family members due to cricket and this time he got the chance. Veteran off spinner told
“My life has revolved around cricket for the last 25 years. I felt that my family deserves a little more of my time so I tried to spend time away from the game. I also read archeology books. I didn’t fret too much about the game.”
Returning to the ground for India, he took 7 wickets in the first innings itself. He got off to a good start and soon sent in the in-form South African opener Aidan Markram to the pavilion.
He gave 145 runs but kept taking wickets and that is why the Indian team got a vital lead of 71 runs in the first innings. In the second innings of this match, Ashwin has a chance to match the world record. With one wicket to take, he will be able to match Muttiah Muralitharan, the fastest bowler to complete 350 Test wickets. He achieved this feat in 66 matches.
At the end of Day three, Ashwin addressed the media where he was asked why he stopped watching cricket when he was not included in the Indian Test squad.
“For starters, I have two kids who don’t sleep that well at nights. Jokes apart, I felt like every time I watch the game on TV, I felt like I wanted to play the game and I was missing out. It is very natural, everybody goes through it,” Ashwin said.
