Pundit expects in-form Chelsea star to soon loose his place in starting XI

According to Owen Hargreaves, Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham could lose his place in Chelsea’s starting line up. The Englishman has been in fine form in recent games. He broke into the first team last season and he is an exciting young prospect. At the start of last season, he was in great form. However, as the season progressed his form vanished and he was inconsistent. There are doubts whether he can be the man to lead Chelsea’s forward line in the future.

This season he has made 13 appearances in all competitions. In his 13 appearances, he has scored 5 goals and further provided 5 assists. Out of these 13 appearances some have been off the bench as well. Abraham was on target recently for the Blues in their 0-2 win over Newcastle.

At the start of the season, Timo Werner was preferred as a lone striker. However, with Christian Pulisic injury, the German has been shifted to the left. This meant that the centre forward position was left vacant for Abraham to fill. The former Aston Villa striker provides more physicality and aerial ability than Werner.

He has done well this season but he could lose his place once Pulisic comes back from injury. Abraham would want more game time to be a part of Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euros 2021. So far this season he has started in games against relatively weaker oppositions.

Why Hargreaves thinks Abraham will lose his place?

Why Hargreaves thinks Abraham will lose his place?

The former Manchester United midfielder believes that in the future, Chelsea’s front three would be Werner, Ziyech, and Pulisic. While Havertz or Mount will play the No.10 role. Ziyech on the right, Werner through the middle, and Pulisic on the left. He also said that for Lampard, Werner is undroppable. He said “I think that’s going to be his best team. But Tammy is going to be really important as a squad player”

Though he also praised the Englishman. The pundit believes that Abraham can be a very good squad player for Chelsea. Every successful team needs such players who can for the team, despite limited chances. As quoted by Metro, he said, “ I think he’s making himself a really good squad player.” Hargreaves pointed out that Chelsea No.9 deserves more credit for his overall game than he is actually given. He said, “I think he got 15 [goals] last season. I don’t think he gets enough credit for his overall game.”

Abraham big size and technically the game is very good as well. He can hold up the play and at the same time he can link up with his other teammates as well. He said, “I love the fact of his size, technically I think he’s better than people give him credit for.” This season the Englishman has improved his hold-up and link-up play.

Even at the start of the season, many people had predicted the same lineup suggested by Hargreaves. However, The Athletic explained that Chelsea could also go for a 4-4-2 formation. In this formation, both Abraham and Werner can play together but Jorginho or Mount will miss out in the midfield.

Can Abraham become Chelsea’s sole striker?

At the start of the season, Werner was preferred as the lone striker. However, he did not look very comfortable in that role. He often needs space to runs at defenders. As a lone striker, he has relied on his movement as well. Once he has the ball in a good position then he can run at the defenders.

However, most clubs don’t offer that space to Chelsea. It is usually that teams sit deep and try to hit the Blues on the counter. Thus Werner is denied the space he needs to attack. However, when the German has Abraham alongside him things are different. He gets the space he needs to run into the left channel. If the former Leipzig forward plays on the left then Pulisic gets left out.

It is a good problem for Lampard to have given the size of his squad. However, the former Derby manager is likely to go for Werner as the lone striker. Even Fernando Torres during his time at Liverpool played as a lone striker, his game is similar to the German. It is now up to Werner how quickly he can adjust to the role of a sole striker considering the physical nature of the league.

If he is unable to do so, then Lampard will have to play Abraham as the sole striker. This could mean that either Havertz, Pulisic, or Ziyech will have to miss out. The answer to this conundrum will only come at the end of the season. At that time we will have more clarity as to what fits best for the Blues.
