Chelsea have been linked with AC Milan’s Gianluigi Donnarumma as a long-term option to strengthen the defence. However, PSG might give them a strong competition as they are said to be interested in getting the player who will be available for free.
Gianluigi Donnarumma is a highly rated goalkeeper who has become one of the best in the world at just 22 years of age. He started his Youth career at Napoli and trained there for 10 years before he was signed by AC Milan in 2014. For 2 years, he trained with players belonging to a higher category.
He got his first call-up 3 days before turning 16 but did not feature in the match. Two months later, he signed the professional contract that tied him with the club till 2018. Initially chosen as a third-choice keeper, he soon became the club’s No.1 after surprising everyone with mature performances.
He made his Serie A debut at the age of 16 years and 242 days, making him the youngest goalkeeper to do so in Italian football after 70 years. By the start of next season, he was already the club’s main player.
Often termed as the next Gianluigi Buffon, he has made over 200 appearances and has kept over 90 clean sheets before he even turned 22. For Italy, he became the youngest player to appear for the U-17 side as well as the senior side.
This year as always, he has been at his very best as AC Milan are in a comfortable position in Serie A. After leading the league for a while, they have been overtaken by their fierce rivals, Inter Milan. They are currently behind their neighbours in 2nd position with 11 points separating them.
PSG’ stance on Donnarumma along with Chelsea’ position
Gianluigi Donnarumma is on high demand for the coming transfer window as he is 3 months away from becoming a free agent. Chelsea along with PSG are the frontrunners in the race.
Chelsea are currently 5th in the Premier League. And after the appointment of Thomas Tuchel, the club has been enjoying a huge string of clean sheets. The 29-year-old Edouardo Mendy was signed by Frank Lampard in the summer in order to have a reliable goalkeeper. Bringing Kepa Arrizabalaga in 2018 for a world-record fee has been a total drain of money as the player has cost his team many victories with disastrous displays. However, bringing Mendy has been a huge benefit for them and he has cemented himself as the primary choice.
His addition was mainly to give Kepa a competition so that he would improve. But that didn’t work and he may be headed for an exit. With his departure, Chelsea will be looking to sign a world-class goalkeeper and Gianluigi Donnarumma can fill that position perfectly. And a free transfer for such a player is available only once in a blue moon.
PSG are also interested in signing the Italian goalkeeper to replace Keylor Navas. However, the 34-year-old player is still at his best and his brilliant display against Bayern Munich made it clear.
“Donnarumma? I don’t talk about transfers now, Navas is great.” – PSG director Leonardo told Sky Italy.
AC Milan have offered 2 new contracts so far with both being rejected by the player. It has also been reported that the club has now given up after their £6.8 million-a-year deal has also failed. An unnamed club has made a lucrative offer of £10 million for Donnarumma to leave the club.
