PSG hits back at Eric Cantona for calling them a ‘small-club’

The Red Devils are in search of new No.7 and have their eyes set on the Frenchman, Antoine Griezmann. But the former United player Eric Cantona thinks Javier Pastore would be a great fit at the Old Trafford.

Pastore as New No.7?

Griezmann was linked to United in the last transfer window but the striker stayed at Atletico due to their transfer ban. The Los Rojiblancos have now signed Diego Costa to reignite the rumours of Griezmann transfer. The Frenchman himself has confessed his desire to play for Manchester United. But former United No.7 has suggested the club to target out of favour PSG playmaker.

“He plays for Paris but he doesn’t play in the team. They have two great players – Pastore and [Hatem] Ben Arfa and neither of them play.” Cantona said in an interview with a YouTube channel-FullTimeDEVILS.

“Pastore will surprise you every time. Every time he touches the ball he surprises you – he gives the ball to someone no-one had seen before. He surprises all the fans.”

“I think he is a great player. He played for Argentina, which is a great country – but he doesn’t play for Paris, which is a small club.”

Falling Down the Pecking Order:

The Argentine joined PSG in 2011 and has made 236 appearances since. But packed midfield at Parc des Princes means Pastore has spent most of his time on the bench in last few months. The midfielder has just 7 appearances in this season but has impressed with his 3 goals.

PSG’s Reply to “Small-Club” Comments:

The French club has not taken Cantona’s comments lightly and trolled the ex-United player with a slapstick tweet. The striker infamously kicked a Crystal Palace fan after his sending off in an away game for Manchester United, back in 1995. He was handed eight-month ban and could never play for his national side after the incident. The striker explained his actions in a press conference and it has become a famous quote since then.

“When the seagulls follow the trawler, it’s because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea. Thank you very much.”

PSG have used Cantona’s own words to troll him in a reply to his “small-club” comment.

Author’s Take:

It was completely unnecessary for Cantona to make such comments about PSG. But the striker has always been known for his controversies. PSG has also replied to a witty tweet and if you ask me, they have won this banter. (Unless Cantona has something more to say.)

But Cantona’s comments about Javier Pastore were totally correct. Man Utd could use an attacking midfielder to take the load off Pogba. We have seen how Red Devils are not the same without their No. 6. The Argentine can be a great addition to the squad and an upgrade to Fellaini.
