Chelsea has been the latest club to join the race alongside Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur in a bid to sign Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Clube De Portugal.
Initially, there was interest from Spurs and then not too long after, Liverpool tagged with La Liga side Atletico Madrid to sign Fernandes, but the Spanish outfit cast away only to for Chelsea to get attracted to the goalscoring midfielder. The versatile attacking midfielder is having a superb season with the Primeira Liga outfit as they sit third on the table still fighting for the league title.
Fernandes has been on the radar of quite a few elite clubs across the continent but interest from the Premier League is the strongest. The 23-year old’s performances; with his numbers speak volumes of his abilities as a player. Fernandes has netted 16 times for Sporting this season and notched up 12 assists which are booming his price on the transfer market. Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham and in dire need of a midfielder who can produce these numbers in the Premier League.
Sporting always has a few players in each summer transfer window that receive massive hype from the media. This time it’s no different in the form of the 23-year-old and the Portuguese outfit is extremely glad about the attention that their superstar is receiving. At the moment, Fernandes has a release clause of €100 million but due to clubs battling in the race for his signature, that value in the market will only grow higher.
Despite €100 million being a figure a bit too far-fetched and overpriced a lot will depend on how Fernandes fares in the FIFA World Cup 2018 with his national side Portugal. If he performs on the biggest stage of them all, there will be no shortage of clubs willing to recruit Fernandes.
However, according to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Chelsea are the latest club who are initiating contact with Fernandes after Liverpool and Tottenham are supposedly ‘lurking’ around the highly-talented midfielder in direct contact with his agent.
The real beneficiaries from the sale of Fernandes would be Sporting because they are looking at making a huge profit from his transfer. However, if Fernandes had to pick a club, he should join Chelsea, to figure out the true characteristics of a player, he must prove himself in difficult situations.
