Lazio changes their stance on midfielder Sergej Milinkovic Savic as they look to cash in.
Sergej Milinkovic Savic has been with Lazio since 2015. Lazio was impressed by his performances with Genk in the Champions League in the 2014-15 season. They went on to sign him for €18.00 million. It went on to a brilliant signing as his current transfer value is almost 5 times the sum Lazio had spent.
Since moving to Serie A he has shown that he is a top-quality player. He has grown into the role and is a crucial part of the club. He goes by the nickname “The Sergeant” because of his leadership and dominance in midfield. The Serbian international has been on the radar of premier league clubs for quite some time now.
Jose Mourinho tried to lure him to Manchester United in 2018 when he was the manager. Although Lazio made it pretty clear that the player won’t be leaving anytime soon. But now it seems that the situation is changing.
According to Sky Sports, Savic might finally be leaving Lazio. In an interview with Sky Sports Italia Lazio, President Tare said,” the player’s desire is crucial”. “Generally speaking, if a player thinks that their time is up and wants to go somewhere else, it shouldn’t be a problem.”
Savic was being linked for a move away from Lazio for a long time. Although the player had never stated any intentions to leave. But now it seems he wants a change of scenery.
Tottenham, Chelsea and United could plot a move for the Serbian International
Savic has been a long term target for Manchester United and should Pogba leave they would be eyeing a replacement. He has 36 goals and 24 assists in 194 matches for Lazio and can be the one United turn to.
But Jadon Sancho is United’s primary target right now. If the move for Sancho happens it will cost United a fortune. In that scenario, any headway is not possible unless Paul Pogba’s departure is confirmed. But should Pogba stay there won’t really be a place for Savic.
Plus signing Savic won’t be simple. The Italians are looking for the amount above €80 million for the Serb. In current situations, if you pay that kind of money you limit yourself financially in the market.
Jose already wanted him at United. If Tottenham were to sign Savic they can fill the hole left by Christian Eriksen. It could be the start of a dominating midfield. But Jose is actively looking for defensive players to boost his squad too. It seems unlikely that Jose will spend that much on one player.
Chelsea Coach Lampard has also shown admiration for Savic’s skill set. With Chelsea looking to reshuffle things Savic can be a good addition to their squad. But Lampard is also targeting a move for an attacking player. Signing Savic is only possible if Chelsea is able to offload players this summer.
The Serbian also has no intention to leave immediately. Savic also had offers from Inter and Juventus but he does not want to play for a rival club. So it looks like the Premier League is the next destination. But Savic will surely leave Lazio in the near future. He’ll definitely be an asset to any club he moves.
