When Oliver Giroud arrived at Chelsea there wasn’t much fanfare about him. He was very popular among the Arsenal supporters in the Premier League. This was because he would often come off the bench to score goals for them. At Stamford Bridge, he was signed by Conte to be the target man.
In his first season, he won the FA Cup with the club. The next season under Sarri, he wasn’t really the first choice. However even after signing Gonzalo Higuain, Giroud became the first choice for Sarri. He even started in the Europa League final scoring one and assisting another.
Again under Frank Lampard, he wasn’t the first choice at the start of the season. As the season progressed he became the first and played a crucial role in Chelsea’s top-four finish. Even this season before Lampard’s sacking he could have again become the first choice.
Giroud’s current situation at Cheslea:
Currently, under Thomas Tuchel he hasn’t played a lot of football. The German has preferred Timo Werner over the Frenchman. Though his compatriot hasn’t been great in front of goal but he continues to put his faith in him. While this season Giroud has scored 11 goals for the Blues in all competitions.
The former Arsenal striker’s contract at the club expires this summer. According to Goal, he has been contacted by top clubs across Europe for a free transfer. However, he is yet to decide upon his future. Chelsea want him to stay and they are willing to offer the 34-year-old a short-term deal.
Oliver Giroud reply to Chelsea’s offer :
The same report from Goal has stated that Giroud is unlikely to renew his contract at the club. This is because of his lack of playing time at the club. Even before the arrival of Tuchel, his status as a player was largely that of a squad player.
This meant that he was never a guaranteed starter at the club. He had to always fight for a place in the starting lineup. But now he wants regular game time which he is unlikely to find at Chelsea.
Next destination for Oliver Giroud:
Despite his age, he is still in good shape and condition. Also, he is a free agent which makes it easier for clubs to approach him. Juventus were interested in signing him this January. Fellow Serie A sides Roma and Lazio have also shown interest in bringing him to Itlay.
It is also possible that he might end up staying in London only. West Ham could make a move for him given that they are in need of a striker. The Hammers sold Sebastian Haller to Ajax in the winter transfer window for $25 million.
A potential move to MLS or a Chinese club is unlikely. Giroud is still fit and he would want to play at the highest level possible. This is because current France manager Didier Deschamps still rates him very highly. Giroud started all the World Cup games in 2018 for France under Deschamps.
12th Man Opinion :
As for Chelsea fans, they will sad to see him leave. Though he is not playing a lot but he still a highly respected player. Even with different managers and competitions, Giroud has always behaved in a professional way.
He has often won games for Blues by coming off the bench. With his potential departure, Chelsea fans would want to see him lift the FA Cup and the Champions League as well. They are in the final of the FA Cup and they have a good chance of playing in the final of the Champions League as well.
