As many veteran cricketers opine their views on the opening duo for India, here’s what Australian spin master Shane Warne has to say about the same.
Legendary Australian cricketer, Shane Warne, on Tuesday came up with some strategies for the men in blue and the management for the upcoming ICC World Cup tournament. According to Warne, it would be better if Rishabh Pant is paired with Rohit Sharma as the opening duo for Team India at the World Cup. However, this would result in striking off Shikhar Dhawan’s position in the team.
As per statistics, Dhawan and Rohit have been one of the most terrific opening pairs of late for India. The two have together mounted 4318 runs in 96 ODI innings at an average of 45.45 which includes 14 centuries. The duo is currently at number four in the all-time lists of highest opening partnership runs in a career.
In a recent interview with India Today, Warne said, “There has been talking if Rishabh Pant can play in the side. I think Dhoni and Pant both can play. I can’t see why Rishabh Pant can’t play as a batsman, he is outstanding. Maybe even open the batting with Rohit Sharma. I know Shikhar Dhawan does a great job but Rishabh Pant opening the batting with Rohit Sharma could be pretty cool too for India. Go with some of these X-factor type things and tactical battles, where you surprise the opposition.”
Warne also mentioned that India have a chance to test Pant’s abilities in the top-order in the upcoming ODI series against Australia, giving Dhawan a different role to play.
“It could be worth throwing Rishabh Pant at the top of the order for a couple of games and see how he goes. Maybe against Australia now [upcoming series] and experiment and see how he goes for the World Cup. Dhawan may have a role to play somewhere else. But I am really looking forward to seeing what India have because they have a lot of players who can do a lot of roles,” he added.
Pant has been proving his abilities time and again – the most recent being in the recent tour of Australia, where he scored 350 runs with an average of 55. He was applauded by many legends of cricket who opined that he should be included in India’s World Cup squad. With each player giving out their best in every possible manner, there would be a few tough calls for the Indian selectors to make.
