Eric Abidal is set to take over from Robert Fernandez as Barcelona sporting director and his first objective is to convince Antoine Griezmann to join the Catalonian club.
Griezmann has been a long-term target for Barcelona and La Blaugrana has no better opportunity to secure his services after July 1st after his release clause from €200 million halves the deficit. Atletico Madrid is desperate to keep hold of their superstar forward but it seems like the La Liga champions will hold the upper hand of the negotiations.
Barcelona is also ready to appoint former left-back Eric Abidal as the club’s sporting director in the next few days. However, the Frenchman’s first major task would be to convince Griezmann to arrive at the Camp Nou.
Griezmann is currently preparing for the FIFA World Cup in Russia with France but has confirmed that he will make a decision over his future before the major tournament begins. The 27-year-old Atleti forward will have to choose between staying at the Spanish capital and being loyal or moving to a better club where he can win more trophies before his career ends.
Even though Abidal has been given the task to lure Griezmann to the Camp Nou, a few weeks ago he questioned whether Barcelona still needed a player despite his great qualities. “I don’t know if the current Barça side needs Griezmann, the important thing is the future and having the best players on your team. To have a player like Griezmann on your team is always an advantage.”
Abidal will certainly have a massive say with the French players in the dressing room and Ousmane Dembele, Samuel Umitti, and Lucas Digne will feel more comfortable with the arrival of the 38-year-old in the backroom.
I think that Abidal’s arrival will be a massive boost of confidence for Barcelona in the backroom because his presence is very important and he could provide Barcelona with Griezmann as he is from the same country as the French star. Griezmann single-handedly carried Atletico Madrid to the Europa League trophy this season.
