Mikel Arteta made a surprising inclusion in the team as Mathew Ryan replaced Bernd Leno in the Arsenal starting line-up against Fulham. However, they were only able to grab a draw against them. But the inclusion of Mathew Ryan might be good news for the goalkeeper situation.
The Australian professional goalkeeper is currently on loan at Arsenal from Brighton and Hove Albion. Before making his way into the Premier League, he used to struggle to find a guaranteed spot. He played his youth days in the Australian League, before making his move to Europe.
Mathew joined the Belgian side, Club Brugge in 2013 and had a fruitful couple of years. He was brilliant there and played over 100 matches in that span. He was always the number one choice and he never let them down. His performance had even attracted attention from Premier League giants, Liverpool who send scouts to keep an eye on the Australian Wonderkid.
In 2015, he signed a 6-year deal with the La Liga side, Valencia. However, this was also the club where he found it difficult to get his playing time. He was given the starting role after their main goalkeeper got injured.
But he also got injured that kept him out for a month. Jaume Domenech who was his replacement filled the position in his absence. Jaume’s good series of performances saw Mat remain sidelined even after returning back to full fitness.
After 2 years of only 23 appearances and disappointment, he was sent out on loan. A year later he joined Brighton and Hove Albion as the prospect of playing in the Premier League interested him. He signed a 5-year deal with the club. He was soon bestowed with the starting role, which he carried out properly.
Will Mikel Arteta make Mathew Ryan move to Arsenal permanent?
Mathew Ryan will be entering the final year of his contract next year. He is currently on loan at Arsenal. The main objective of his arrival was to give cover for their main goalkeeper, Bernd Leno. After losing Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa, they were left short-handed in that place.
He hasn’t been able to do much as he has made only 2 appearances. The first one came in a 1-0 loss to Aston Villa when Leno was suspended. Whereas the second one came in their recent match against Fulham, which ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
However, the latest inclusion in the squad had nothing to do with Leno’s injury. Which has raised the question if Mikel Arteta is interested in making a permanent bid for the 29-year-old goalkeeper. He has been a huge competition for Bernd Leno during the training sessions. Mikel Arteta also praised the player and stated the following before the kick-off.
“It’s rotation, it’s precaution, there are players that haven’t recovered from the day, so we have to be very careful. There are others that deserve to play – for example, I put Mat in goal today because he trains like a beast, he’s been really positive around the place, he’s been doing very well and he deserves the chance.” – Mikel Arteta told Sky Sports before the Kick-off.
However, he could not guide his club to victory as Arsenal succumbed to disappointing performances again. After the dominating win over Slavia Prague, it was expected to be a walk in the park for The Gunners. They were almost on the verge of losing, had it not been for the dying minute goal from Eddie Nkeitah in which Ryan had a contribution. Arsenal are currently 9th in the Premier League.
