There were high expectations when Van de Beek joined Manchester United this summer. The Dutchman was a part of the famous Ajax team that reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. That is when he rose to fame in European football.
Manchester United signed from Ajax for a fee of $34 million. He was signed to bring in competition for the likes of Pogba and Fernandes. However, he has not even managed to get some playing time at the club.
This season he has only made 27 appearances in all competitions for Manchester United. He has only scored one goal and further provided one assist. With such limited game time, questions are now being raised as to why he was signed in the first place.
During his time at Ajax, he was thriving in the midfield. Van de Beek was able to anchor midfield against top teams like Juventus, Real Madrid, and Chelsea. However, at Manchester United things haven’t gone as per plan. He has struggled for game time and it looks like he is yet to settle in life at Old Trafford.
Manchester United on a swap deal for Van de Beek
According to Italian news outfit Tuttosport, Van de Beek could be a part of a swap deal. Though his manager Ole Gunnar Solskjear has always defended him, he could still be open to letting him go. The Premier League giants could also have an offer for him as well.
The report from Tuttosport has claimed that the Red Devils will try to sign Adrien Rabiot from Juventus. In order to do that they will offer Van de Beek a swap deal. Andrea Pirlo is said to be keen on working with Van de Beek. While Solskjear had wanted to sign the Frenchman.
The Turin giants also wanted to sign Van de Beek when he was at Ajax. However, at that time, Van de Beek decided to join Manchester United. Burno Fernandes is the star midfielder at the club. The likes of Pogba, Fred, and McTominay are ahead of the Dutchman in the midfield.
The Bianconeri are not the only Italian club interested in him. Inter Milan has also shown interest in signing him. This season he has largely been given chances in the Europa League. He has been a squad rotation player majorly.
12th Man Opinion
The first thing we must understand is why was Van De Beek signed in the first place. Some had argued that he was signed to replace Paul Pogba. The Frenchman has been heavily linked with a move away from the club.
However, at the time being it looks like that won’t be a good idea. Vand De Beek hasn’t been able to replace Pogba. There is no doubt that he is a talented player but he won’t get a lot of chances with Pogba and Fernandes on the team.
Thus it would be better to sell him. As for the swap deal is concerned, the decision is a good one for Juve bad one for Manchester United. The Red Devils already have Fred and McTominay.
Manchester United are clearly not in need of another defensive midfielder. While Juventus could use an attacking midfielder. Rabiot hasn’t been able to hit the heights that were expected of him. Thus there would be no loss to Juve as well if they sell the Frenchman.
