Herrera is set to leave United at the end of the season and Solksjaer wants to replace him.
Tough time seem to be arriving for Manchester United. The arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was meant to bring old glory days back at Old Trafford. However Solskjaer’s tenure as permanent boss started with a defeat. The Red Devils look unlikely to finish in top 4 and are struggling to extend the contracts of David De Gea, Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford. With Herrera set to leave Old Trafford, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants this Premier League player to replace Ander Herrera.
Manchester United will consider making an offer for Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye this summer. The Everton midfielder, who was the subject of a January bid from Paris Saint-Germain, is now being considered by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the Norwegian draws up his list of summer targets. Man Utd’s manager needs someone to fill the void due to be left by Herrera, who is set to complete a move to PSG as a free agent at the end of the season. And Gueye has emerged as a leading contender, with Solskjaer exploring the possibility of luring him to Old Trafford as part of his summer overhaul. Herrera has made 187 appearances for United across his five campaigns in English football. Herrera was holding out for weekly wages of £200,000, but United were not willing to go above £170,000 plus bonuses. Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward elected to activate a single-season option on Herrera’s initial Old Trafford deal last summer instead of agreeing an improved contract; and then failed to tie the 29-year-old down.
That has left Solskjaer looking for an experienced replacement, with Gueye fitting the criteria. The 29-year-old is Premier League proven, with his outstanding performances for Everton prompting interest from PSG. Herrera’s proposed move to the Parc de Princes is likely to end the French champions’ interest, leaving United ready to step in. The Senegal international could be available for less than £30million in a summer where Solskjaer hopes to stamp his mark on the squad he inherited from Jose Mourinho. United could sign as many as five new players when the transfer window opens, including a right back, centre back, two midfielders and a right winger. Declan Rice is another holding midfield target, along with Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez. Solskjaer also wants an attacking midfielder, with Sporting Lisbon captain Bruno Fernandes being considered.
United will have to offer more than what PSG is offering to lure Gueye. Gueye represents a cheaper option then other targets especially Declan Rice of West Ham United. West Ham will refuse to sell Rice so soon after the 20-year-old’s breakthrough. Given United want to overhaul the squad in a limited budget they can promote McTominay.
