Roma is keen on signing United defender Chris Smalling. But the Italian side is not able to meet the United asking price.
Manchester United have been looking to ship away some of their stars. One such man is defender, Chris Smalling. The defender has been on loan at Serie A side AS Roma since 2019. The Italian outfit is now hoping to make the move permanent.
Chris Smalling joined AS Roma on a full season loan in 2019. He was able to make an impact on Roma along with his arrival itself. The Italian club made him a key member of their defense. Hence, they are keen on making the deal a permanent one.
Manchester United are reportedly asking for £18.2m for the Englishman. But Roma seems to have trouble with the fee. They are one of the teams hit hard by the pandemic. And are in a very difficult financial situation. They hope to seal the deal for £16.3m which is £1.9m short of United’s asking price.
But they seem pretty keen on making the deal happen as well. It will be hard for them to find a player like Chris. He was able to adjust with Stadio Olimpico easily. So if they need such a player who already is compatible with their ways it’ll be a tough search.
But with other interests from all across Europe. Roma will have to make a fast move or they will lose a valuable player.
United may not lower the bar
Manchester United has known to be rough when it comes to business. Ed Woodward and co may not lower their £18.2m bar. Though Smalling was not able to root himself in United like in Roma. They won’t be too smooth in easing their pricetag.
Roma is the party that needs the signing done. With Juventus, Napoli and Inter Milan also keeping an eye on him. Roma will have to make a fast approach if they don’t want to lose their ace. United look to fund other transfers with the fee from shipping him off. Hence, Woodward will stay strong with his demands.
Roma seems to be fine with a £16.3m fee which is £1.9m short of United’s price. The pandemic seems to have hit the Italian side hard. If not for this issue they could’ve made the deal happen. They could either opt for another loan deal with the Englishman. But, will have to talk terms with United first.
United keen on signing a new defender
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been searching for an ideal partner for Harry Maguire. Though United has seven defenders to play with. Ole has not yet been able to settle with Maguire’s buddy. Though they line Victor Lindelof in most games, he lacks the pace Ole looks for. Hence, they are looking to bring in a defensive option this summer.
The Red Devils have eyed many stars lately, Kalidou Koulibaly and Milan Skriniar being the top targets. But both the signings will need a hefty price. United themselves are suffering from financial problems. Hence, they look to ship away deadwood to fund their transfers. United have also been eyeing Gabriel Magalhaes, as per Daily Record.
The youngster has proven to be a formidable defensive option. Lille is also rating him at around £25m. A price Manchester will be happy with, hence, a deal looks possible. The Chris Smalling deal is a fundraiser to such deals for Ole and co. Hence, if Roma cannot meet their requirements, Woodward and co will cash him to other suitors.
