According to the latest reports, Premier League side Manchester United are keen on signing Paris Saint Germain forward Edinson Cavani in the upcoming January transfer window to bolster their attacking department.
There were massive question marks aimed at the transfer board when the Red Devils allowed the likes of big-name forwards Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to leave the club in the summer transfer window to Serie A club Inter Milan and failed to replace them. With French attacker Anthony Martial spending most of his time on the sidelines due to injury and English striker Marcus Rashford failing to cope up with the enormous amount of pressure being put on him, United are in dire need of attacking reinforcements in the next transfer window.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team held out a 1-1 draw against Liverpool on Sunday but it’s quite clear that he needs to invest in a goalscorer in the winter to try to finish off the second half of the season with a few better performances.
There are plenty of reports linking the red half of Manchester with the likes of Juventus’s Mario Mandzukic and Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson over the past few weeks. However, recently, Paris Saint-Germain hitman Edinson Cavani has been added to their rumored transfer targets list as well as the Uruguayan’s current deal with the Ligue 1 champions ends in the summer.
Cavani is undoubtedly one of the best goalscorers in Europe and has been at the top of his game for quite a while now. But with the French champions unwilling to extend his contract at the Parc Des Princes, the star forward is on the lookout for his next destination.
If Solakjaer and United plan to get him on board at Old Trafford in the January transfer window itself, they might have to shell out a considerable transfer fee because of Cavani’s high wage rate as well as the fact that PSG will take advantage of United’s situation. But United might have to act fast because La Liga side Atletico Madrid are also keeping tabs on the 32-year-old in order to replace the erratic Diego Costa.
There is no doubt that United need to sign up a few forward players in the next transfer window because they are running short on goalscorers. Cavani would be a great option in January but United should rather target a younger player who can provide a solid base for the future as well. Selling Lukaku and Sanchez in the same transfer window was a big mistake and they are now paying the price.
