Manchester United look set to sell two of their young players Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw in order to boost their funds for the summer transfer window.
This season will be a season to forget for Manchester United fans having failed to win any major trophy. To add insult to injury, it was their local rivals Manchester City who were able to clinch the title and that too in record time. This had prompted United boss Jose Mourinho to start thinking about revamping his squad for next season. Consequently, this might lead to a large clear-out in the current United squad.
According to reports by The Sun, striker Anthony Martial and left-back Luke Shaw are already set to leave Old Trafford in the summer. Mourinho is expected to be busy this transfer window and selling the two youngsters will be a major boost to their transfer funds.
Martial has experienced difficulty in breaking into the first eleven throughout the season. With competition from newly signed Alexis Sanchez, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata, it is highly likely that the 22-year-old might be on his way out this summer. Moreover, Italian giants Juventus have shown interest in the young French international and are rumoured to have agreed to a 70 million euro deal for the striker.
In the case of Luke Shaw, complications regarding Shaw’s commitment and fitness were clear to see. The left-back has also had a number of public outbursts with the Portuguese manager over the course of the season. With the availability of Ashley Young at full back, Luke Shaw might be on his way out of Old Trafford as well.
This summer may also see the departure of Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind, both of whom have to be sacrificed in order to fund Mourinho’s transfer funds. Additionally there have been rumours surrounding the departure of Frenchman Paul Pogba at the end of the season. However, reports suggest the midfielder will remain at the Theater of Dreams for the seasons to come.
Manchester United will be fighting to reach the same as Manchester City in terms of squad depth this summer and this will call for the selling of a number of members of the current United squad. Having said this, it is highly likely that Martial will leave given the tough competition for his position. Shaw might also leave given his lack of playing time and the issues that persist with the United boss.
