Once widely touted as the next big thing at Old Trafford, Belgium attacker Adnan Januzaj quickly waned and was sold to Real Sociedad last season. But, here is the flip side.
Following some uninspiring stints with Borussia Dortmund and Sunderland, English Premier League behemoths Manchester United decided to cash their young player Adnan Januzaj and the Belgium International eventually ended up joined La Liga outfit Real Sociedad.
Since his move to the Spanish side, Januzaj has been impressive and has starred at Real Sociedad. A string of impressive and exceptional performances by this youngster earned him a place in Gareth Southgate’s 23-man squad that travelled to Russia for the FIFA World Cup.
While Belgium lost to France in the semi-finals, the European side had a pretty good tournament. In their group stage clash against England, Belgium fielded a relatively inexperienced squad and it was Januzaj’s awe-inspiring goal that decided the story of the game.
Now, Manchester United fans might be feeling that their club did something wrong by deciding to sell Januzaj to Sociedad. But here’s the flip side. Manchester United insist that they have a buy-back clause which means they could sign Januzaj back.
However, it remains to be seen if Mourinho and Manchester United would utilize the opportunity and sign the Belgium International who has so far been performing decently in the La Liga. Before he left the United, he made 63 appearances for the Red Devils and scored on 5 occasions.
In the La Liga 2017-18 season, he made 28 appearances for Real Sociedad in the league. He, in total, played 35 games and scored 4 goals. Including an appearance in the FIFA World Cup, Januzaj has made 9 appearances for Belgium National team.
Januzaj is just 23. At Real Sociedad, he will get adequate playing time and will have the opportunity to improve and develop by himself. If Manchester United trigger his buy-back clause and bring him back to the Old Trafford, there is no guarantee he would find a spot in the squad. The lack of playing time would also affect his progress. So, it is better United not decide to sign the player.
