Manchester United place bid for World Cup winner defender

Manchester United have been keen to bolster their defence for a while now. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did urge the hierarchy to invest in the defence last summer. However, the Red Devils did not make any solid moves to sign a defender. But this time they look to be making some promising moves.

According to Spanish outlet Marca, United have already place a bid for Raphael Varane. Manchester United have reportedly made a £43m bid for the French ball-stopper. Varane has been pondering his future at Real Madrid for some time now. His current contract with Los Blancos expires in the June of 2022.

Recent updates inform us that Varane doesn’t have any intentions of continuing his long-term stay in Madrid. The French footballer has been a part of Real Madrid for a decade now. Raphael Varane has won 18 titles with Real Madrid, including four UCL trophies. However, Varane is considering options away from Santiago Bernabeu.

Manchester United eyeing the centre-back for several years now. And have also made their intentions clear to the Spanish side. However, Real Madrid were reluctant to let go of their ace defender. But that may not be the case anymore.

Manchester United to line up new defensive pair:

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been facing trouble in the defence every now and then. The Norwegian manager did consider different lineups at the backline. But yet feel that there is some void in his defence. Hence, Ole has been urging the higher-ups to make a move for a defender.

Harry Maguire has been doing fine this season, but occasional errors. But Ole finds it hard to find Maguire a proper partner. Victor Lindelof has been the one to partner up with Maguire the most this term. However, Lindelof lacks the pace to catch up with the opposition, opening gaps in the defence. Eric Bailey has also been introduced at times, yet the results aren’t too great.

However, adding Raphael Varane to the lineup may be a huge boost. The 2018 World Cup winner is fast and is great at aerial challenges. He reads the ball well and has a way of syncing well with his partner. Ole Gunnar is searching for such a player and Varane is likely to be the best option.

Varane is an all-in-one package and Ole is keen to lure him in. Adding the Frenchman will improve United’s defensive quality to another level. Manchester United have made their interest clear with their initial bid. However, Real Madrid are tough to negotiate with and is likely to give them a hard time.

Although Manchester United have placed a £43m bid on the centre-back. Several sources have reported that Florentino Perez is asking for a sum of £60m. However, United will surely find this price too high for the 27-year-old. Also, Varane has not been at his top form for the most part of this term.

The centre-back did make some costly errors for Madrid this term. And also has been diminishing in the form of late. However, United are still keen to sign a player with hopes to boost their defence. Varane is also keen to make a shift so this may help United sign him at a cut price.

Manchester United are currently 2nd in the PL table with slight hopes of winning the league. However, if they are to keep their form up for next season. United must make sure they spend their money on some key transfers.

Ole Gunnar and co have come a long way from where they started. They were a strong side this term with their fast counterattacks. They did well in the defence as well but could have been better. Hence, Manchester United are hoping to land Varane in the summer to solidify their backline.
