Chelsea and Manchester United clash again in the FA Cup final and one former Red Devil believes that the Blues will lose and Manchester United will come out on top.
Manchester United will face Chelsea in the FA Cup final soon and many hope to see Jose Mourinho lead the Red Devils to a record-equalling 13th FA Cup trophy. However, Blues’ fans will hope that Chelsea will have something to say about that despite them struggling to defend their title and finishing 5th in the Premier League.
The Blues have struggled this season, and have watched Antonio Conte go through a rather surprising fall from grace. The former Juventus boss hit pay dirt in his very first season with his tactics and went on to win the Premier League in his debut season. However, since then budget disagreements with the Chelsea board and a variety of other factors including new signings failing to live up to their potential have all lead to both the club’s and Conte’s struggles this season.
All this has seen Chelsea struggle to maintain Champions League football, with the Blues finishing fifth in the Premier League. All this has led to a former Manchester United legend and six-time Premier League winner Rio Ferdinand to back his former club ahead of the FA Cup final.
In an interview, Ferdinand said “I fancy Manchester United to win the game. There are still improvements to be made to the team but when I played there the mentality at the beginning of every season, and I’m sure it is the same now, get your hands on a trophy and finish top of the league.
They have obviously finished second. But if they can get their hands on that trophy then they have done alright. The way to look at it with Mourinho is, has this team improved from last year? Well, the league table does not lie so yes the team has. Sometimes people are bit disrespectful if you are a defensive-natured coach – it’s still an art form in the game.”
Chelsea could end up and produce something absolutely brilliant to beat Manchester United, but given their recent performances, it would be a tough ask. The Blues were humiliated by Newcastle United and treated to a 3-0 loss. If Chelsea does end up performing like that again, then Manchester United will have an easy FA Cup win.
