Manchester United are looking forward to part ways with David de Gea in the summer. The Spanish shot-stopper has not been at his best for a while now. But still, bag a huge amount from the club as his wages. Hence, club owners, The Glazers are keen to offload the player in the summer window.
United has been facing trouble in the goalkeeper area for a while now. The decreasing form of the Spaniard has been a cause of concern. Also, with rising talent like Dean Henderson available, the Spaniard seems excessive. Henderson has been sidelined due to de Gea and the 2nd keeper is uneasy due to the lack of opportunity.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also keen to resolve their keeper issue ahead of the next campaign. The goalkeeper issue has been ongoing since last summer. Manchester United was planning to let go of de Gea last summer. But ultimately had to retain both him and Henderson.
However, parting ways with the keeper will not be easy. According to Sunday Mirror, United will have to give him a ‘bank busting’ payoff. But this is not the first time United are in a similar situation. Manchester United had to pay Sanchez £10m during his parting to Italy.
Henderson over de Gea
David de Gea got a contract renewal back in 2019 worth £36.4m. Since then the shot-stopper has been receiving a hefty £350,000-per-week wage bill. However, the keeper has not been performing enough to deserve this wage. Hence, the Glazers are planning to go separate ways with the keeper.
The Spaniard has been diminishing in form since the 2018 World Cup. We even saw the long-term United keeper make some major blunders in the Premier League. Ole and co were hoping that it was just a phase and that he will be back to top form. Considering his long years of experience with the club. However, even after a season, the Spaniard is not upto his former glory.
Meanwhile, Dean Henderson has been an impressive talent of late. The Englishman did secure some impressive stats during his loan period at Sheffield United. Even this term, in his 7 appearances for Manchester, Henderson has secured 4 clean sheets. Hence, United are planning to give opportunities for the 24-year-old from next season.
The Glazers are prioritizing to cut down the wage bills in the summer. And de Gea is among the high pa stars at Old Trafford. Despite Ole’s deep attachment with the player. The club owners are keen to save some money for the club. By cutting on their unwanted expenditures.
Manchester United hefty wage bills
Manchester United spends a total of £570,000 weekly on goalkeeper wages alone. A large part of this going to David de Gea alone, in his £350,000 weekly wages. The 2nd keeper Dean Henderson also receive a sum of £100,000 per week after his contract renewal last summer.
In addition to the duo, United pay £70,000 to Sergio Romero. The Argentine has not made a single appearance for United this term. Romero, despite being a dependable shot-stopper has been in trouble with injuries. Lee Grant and Joel Pereira also receive a combined £50,000 weekly.
The United bosses are not too happy with spending this lot of money. And are hoping to cut down on their expenditure. Despite having to pay de Gea a big sum to terminate his contract. Things may be fruitful for the club in the long run.
However, reports also claim that Ole has an idea to extend de Gea’s stay at Old Trafford. But with the club prioritizing to resolve their keeper issue. And their keenness to cut excess wages will affect the Spaniard. There is a couple of months left till the summer window. So anything can happen before that, United is likely to see some major changes ahead of next campaign.
