Man United interested in signing ‘cheap and good’ La Liga midfielder

Manchester United are eyeing a potential move for Getafe midfielder Mauro Arambarri in the upcoming transfer window. The club’s hierarchy views the player as a cheap and affordable alternative to other midfield targets.

The Red Devils suffered a shock 4-2 loss to rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Thursday. United needed a win against the Reds to confirm their second-place finish in the Premier League this season. But despite taking an early lead in the game through Bruno Fernandes, they failed to capitalise from there and ultimately lost the game.

The loss was largely down to some poor defending and midfield frailties. Fred and Scott McTominay again started in a midfield pivot. And the duo failed to connect the midfield with attack and did not provide a sufficient defensive shield.

As a result, they are looking to sign a new midfielder in the summer transfer window. There are loads of midfielders linked with a move to Old Trafford and they have now identified a cheaper option.

United’s midfield needs improving:

Fred and McTominay have started most of United’s games this season. But they lack creativity going forward and do not provide the necessary cover to their centre-backs. Their passing is also not at the required level.

No wonder United have struggled against the traditional ‘big six’ this season, with their only wins coming against Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur. And Fred and McTominay have started 11 out of the 12 possible games against the ‘big six’.

And the game against Liverpool was a typical example of their poor performances this season. Former United captain Gary Neville heavily criticised both the midfielder’s performance against Liverpool. Neville believes the duo are not good enough to win trophies at United. He said after the game:

“All of United’s shortcomings have been shown up in the last couple of days. Look at the performance of the two midfielders. [Scott] McTominay is a good, honest player. And they’ve got Fred and as long as those players are in midfield for Manchester United, they will not be winning any big trophies.”

United interested in Arambarri, is he a good fit?

According to Traspasos (via Sport Witness), the Red Devils are exploring the possibility of signing Uruguayan midfielder Mauro Arambarri this summer. The 25-year-old defensive midfielder is a cheaper and more affordable option than other United’s midfield targets like Declan Rice and Edouard Camavinga.

As per the report, the club’s board view Arambarri as the ‘perfect option’ for the role as he will be available for around £25 million. He has a contract running till 2023 with the La Liga side. He has made 32 league games this campaign and has been an important player for the club.

But Arambarri is again a high-risk signing for United, just like Fred a few seasons ago. He provides good defensive cover to his team but has only a pass accuracy of 73%, which is lower than that of Fred and McTominay.

He might be a cheaper option but United need an expert in the midfield position. Even at £25 million, they can get Brighton’s midfield general Yves Bissouma, who has again been very impressive for the Seagulls this season and is Premier League proven.
