The Manchester United hierarchy held a talk with Edinson Cavani on Tuesday. The Red Devils want the Uruguayan striker to extend his contract for one more year. Club executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and newly-appointed director of football John Murtough tried to make proposals with the player.
The Uruguayan International came to Old Trafford last summer on a free transfer. The former PSG striker, however, has not been able to sync well in England. Cavani was seen struggling with physical issues as well other matters. Hence, his time in England is likely to be short.
There are rumours of Cavani planning to join Argentinian club Boca Juniors. Cavani’s contract at United expires at the end of this season. Despite his struggles, the Uruguayan was able to net 8 goals and provide 2 assists in 18 Premier League appearances.
The 34-year-old was able to help United to make a comeback against Southampton earlier this season. Cavani’s 2 late goals helped Manchester United to seal the game in a 3-2 victory. Considering these factors Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to keep the striker for at least one more year.
Cavani’s struggles at Manchester United:
Although Edinson Cavani was able to be a hero for United at times. We did see the veteran striker struggle at times as well. Cavani had physical issues at certain points in the season. And also had a tiny setback with the England FA.
Edinson Cavani was not happy with the three-game ban he got back in January. As well as a £100,000 fine for using the word ‘negrito’ in an Instagram post. Many fans also came to support the striker as he did not have any racially abusive intentions. However, the English FA did not budge from their action.
Cavani’s father Luis also explains that his son is not comfortable in England. Hence, the news of a move to Boca Juniors is strengthening. In addition to this Uruguay assistant coach Mario Rebollo also urges the player to move. So that he can find more ‘rhythm and competition’ elsewhere.
Despite all these factors that push him away from United. It is still uncertain about the Uruguayan’s future. Manchester United are trying to tie down the player with a fresh contract.
It’s all upto Cavani:
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to keep the Uruguayan at Old Trafford. Manchester United are reportedly targeting to sign forwards in the summer(via, MEN Sports). But with Marcus Rashford likely to undergo surgery on his shoulder. The youngster will miss out on the starting of the upcoming season.
Hence, Ole wants to maintain the balance in the frontline by retaining Cavani. However, Cavani fears that the fresh arrivals may tamper with his game-time. Hence, the player is still considering different options.
Ole is hoping that the meeting on Tuesday with Ed Woodward and John Murtough with being fruitful. However, the hierarchy have made it clear that the final decision is up to Edinson Cavani. So it is still uncertain about his future.
Meanwhile, Cavani has been training with the United squad. He looks well and fit and will be a part of the United squad for the rest of the season. With a few more months left until the end of the season. Cavani may choose to stay at Old Trafford. Ole and co will try to make the player feel at home. Hoping that it will help change his mind about staying in England.
