Manchester United has received a major transfer in their pursuit to sign Villarreal’s Pau Torres this summer. The Spanish club are now willing to accept a price lower than that of Torres’s release clause.
The Red Devils are currently second in the Premier League table and face Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. But they are 14 points behind leaders Manchester City, having played two games less. And if they want to bridge that gap between them and their noisy neighbors ahead of next season, they have to spend big in the summer transfer window.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has identified positions he wants to strengthen in the summer. Defensive midfield, right-wing, and centre-back are three key areas Solskjaer would like to improve, most importantly centre-back. And if Edinson Cavani leaves Old Trafford this summer, a forward also becomes a priority position.
It remains to be seen which positions Solskjaer prioritizes first, given the limited transfer budget available due to the global pandemic.
United need a new centre-back
The Red Devils are the league’s second-highest goal-scoring team this season. And despite their recent improvement, it is their defence where they have lacked massively.
The club has conceded 33 goals in 30 league games this campaign, compared to 36 in the whole of last season. Captain Harry Maguire has been ever-present at the back since his arrival last summer. But United needs someone who can partner the Englishman in the heart of the defence.
Victor Lindelof has been in good form recently. But his partnership has come under some heavy scrutiny throughout the campaign. United plays very deep with Maguire and Lindelof because of which United midfielders are unable to go forward and help out the attack. Eric Bailly is injury-prone and his future at Old Trafford is still uncertain. And Solskjaer does not prefer Axel Tuanzebe as a centre-back.
As a result, United are looking to find an able centre-back to partner Maguire, with Raphael Varane, Jules Kounde and Pau Torres some of the players linked with a move to the Theatre of Dreams.
Pau Torres boost for United
United may not able to afford players like Varane and Kounde given the asking price of both the players from their respective clubs. That leaves them only with Pau Torres. And United have received a significant boost to land the Spain international this summer.
According to ESPN via Metro Sport, his club Villarreal would ask for only £43 million, which is £13 million less than his release clause of £56 million. He has a contract till 2024 with the Yellow Submarines. But the club are willing to lower his price.
The 24-year is one of the most promising centre-backs in the world and has been a regular starter for Villarreal for the past two seasons. He is also a regular feature for the Spain international team.
His impressive form has seen him attract interests from both Real Madrid and Manchester United. The Los Blancos are keen to sign him to replace the outgoing Sergio Ramos with Torres ready to take his next big step in his career. Both clubs are ready to battle it out for his signature this summer.
