Manchester United And Tottenham Not Able To Find A Solution For Toby Alderweireld

The Red Devils are not able to negotiate a deal for Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld with transfer negotiations £20 million apart.

Jose Mourinho is keen to bring in a top-class central defender at Manchester United to bolster his chances of competing in the Premier League against local rivals and champions Manchester City. The Portuguese boss targeted Samuel Umitit and Clement Lenglet but Barcelona seems to have the upper hand on both those negotiations.

But there is still one highly rated centre-back who seems up for grab in this summer transfer window and Toby Alderweireld is certainly one of the most accomplished defenders in the Premier League. The Belgian is also keen on moving away from Tottenham Hotspur this summer although Spurs are not willing to let go of their prized asset for cheap.

United and Spurs not on The Same Page-

According to sources from ESPN, Manchester United do not want to exceed a deal more than £50 million on a new centre-back as they plan to bring in a new top class defender. However, the North London side are not ready to allow Alserweireld for anything less than £70 million.

Spurs believe that after Liverpool secured the services for Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton in the January transfer market for a record fee of £75 million, Alderweireld comes under the same bracket of established centre-backs in the Premier League.

Tottenham is not willing to offer Alderweireld a new contract because of his high wage demands but Alderweireld has just two seasons left on his current deal which puts his release clause at £25 million next summer.

Manchester United may look at alternatives for Alderweireld with Mourinho eyeing Raphael Varane or Sevilla’s Clement Lenglet.

Author’s Take-

I think that in this transfer market £70 million is worth the money for Alderweireld but I also think that there are other defenders that could come for cheap at Manchester United. But Alderweireld has experience in England over most other defenders from across the continent.
